I agree that this is not secure enough for normal weather but they might have something this for staging when preparing to fight. I have no idea

I have a really hard time believing the two metals differ enough in how much they contract in cold temperatures to make the balls pop out.

It’s a discredited theory yes. Shot could have been stored on a tray such as that but more often its on rails or wooden cutouts and only if they expect battle. And also yes it’s unlikely to be so cold to differentially contract the metal.
