Supplementary question: what’s the difference with kbin in this regard? Or is it dead.

Lemmy was closer to reddit than Kbin. Lemmy always had more users and users were more spread out. Kbin basically had like 70% of the users on one instance, the biggest instance is shutting down, there is now only one instance accepting new signups. So yea, seems dead.
