It’s an old Hollywood trifk to use. British accents for Continental European characters. Americans have a hard time understanding German and especially French accents. I think yhat today that is best solved by simply weiting the script in those languages and putting subtitles since many viewers already prefer subtitles.
Comment on Just saw Nosferatu (2024, dir Eggers)

the missing part I felt was that the supposed Germany felt awfully British thanks to some weird character choices (accents, some dialogues. Two male characters drinking liquor and smoking cigars for example) There were several other languages heard through out the movie but I understand making the big part of it in german would not fare well in the subtitle hating US and also is a vision little too megalomaniacal for this movie.
that said i liked the movie very much, maybe i haven’t seen Northman but I wouldn’t consider it as good as VVitch or Lighthouse. Those two threaded the line between horror and eroticism fine, Nosferatu sometimes landed to hard on the sex stuff and I laughed audiably several times. Sometimes it slipped a little too hard into parody of the original but I guess there was some intention behind that. Despite all that I still think it was a very good movie.

Yea, there was definitely a ridiculousness to the tone at times. I read one critic say that they thought they could hear Eggers laughing in joy behind the camera.
