- Comment on Todd Howard asked on-air why Bethesda didn't optimise Starfield for PC: 'We did [...] you may need to upgrade your PC' 1 year ago:
ID tech is nowhere near flexible enough for something like Starfield or even Skyrim. It’s partially the reason why it’s so efficient. It simply isn’t fit for the task.
And the Bethesda developers are intimately familiar with Creation Engine, achieving the same level of productivity with something new will take a long time. Switching the engine is not an easy thing.
Not to say that Creation Engine isn’t a cumbersome mess. It has pretty awful performance, stability and is full of bugs, but on the other hand it’s extremely flexible which has allowed its games to have massive mod communities.
- Comment on Researching alcohol interventions for a friend. I’ve seen more ads for alcohol than ever in my life 1 year ago:
It should be noted that setting Adguard as your DNS will allow Adguard to track the domains you visit. The latest info I can find is that a lot of their team is still located in Russia, which makes them susceptible to government demands regardless of their intentions.
DNS adblocking should be the last resort. On Android there are many ways to do system wide local adblocking (with and without root). Don’t know about iOS. Alternatively you can do network level blocking with something like a pi-hole.
- Comment on Twitter/X new ID Verification - First Look 1 year ago:
What? Twitter is majority owned by Musk, by a very very large margin. Not that giving your info to Musk is any better than giving it to the Saudi government.
- Comment on Men in power must take lead on tackling toxic masculinity, says Humza Yousaf 1 year ago:
Maybe he should start with himself then?
Berating men for not controlling the behavior of other men is peak “toxic masculinity”. I am not responsible for other men any more than women are responsible for other women, or white/black people responsible for other white/black people.
problem we have collectively created.
I have not created any problems, as I have always treated people equally, the same as I would want to be treated. If you, Mr Minister have been a sexist asshole, don’t project that on me. And I am not a part of a collective. Assigning blame based on belonging to demographic is the core principle of bigotry.
Seriously, just imagine if he said black people in positions of power must take lead in tackling toxic black culture. That would be completely unacceptable, as it should be, and as this should be.
- Comment on Dell fined $6.5M after admitting it made overpriced monitors look discounted 1 year ago:
They sold $1.3 million of monitors with this tactic, according to the article. So the fine is not that unreasonable, relative to what we usually see.
However, I think it should be about 20 times larger. Only 5x the revenue is not enough of a deterrent, because it’s not likely they get caught anywhere near one in five times. If a person steals $500, fining them $2500 and letting them go would be absurd.
These fines should be a “holy shit we fucked up really bad” situation with CEO and the whole board getting a 4 am call. Not a “whatever, back to business” situation.
- Comment on The streaming model is cratering — here's how that's hurting actors, writers and fans 1 year ago:
This is the second time I’ve seen an article incorrectly call a streaming service a “streamer”. Have they been paid off by some PR campaign to attempt to redefine the word?
