yeah I think monolith were taken off the series even during the like… expansions? I’m not sure what you’d refer to the DLC to fear 1 as?
2 was a serviceable game for sure, it just felt like it was on rails a little bit. I find it hard to articulate exactly why that is from memory but I don’t feel like downloading it again 😅.
3 went completely off the rails, however.

I quite enjoyed quake 2 but I agree that the thematic shift was super jarring. There’s a community mod that helps bridge the themes of 1 and 2 very well named Call of the Void, which may make it more palatable in some way?
- Comment on [deleted] 1 week ago:
fear 2 and 3 could never really live up to the original. 2 sort of watered things down, 3 was kind of bizarre plot wise.
I almost feel obliged to bring up halo 4 and the rest of the 343 fever dream of games.

- Comment on Bethesda has released a major update for Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, significantly improving the overall experience on the console. 4 months ago:
I suppose I might be taking the general consensus for granted here, especially around fallout 4s launch window. I played the hell out of it myself and walked away pretty disappointed.
4 had a much more streamlined approach to ‘3D fallout’ likening it more to an action adventure game rather than RPG. Many of 3 and NVs more RPG styled mechanics were pared back quite a lot.
several examples are limitless skills (not having to define a build), limited dialogue options due to the player character being VA’d, item degradation being removed (I think?), VATS being reworked to fit better with this paradigm shift, andI feel as if I could say with some level of objectivity that endings in 4 pale in comparison to the breath of outcomes you can achieve in NV.
If you like action adventure games in a post apocalyptic setting then 4 is a good time. If you like an RPG in the same setting then 4 is kind to shit?

…save for being an actual fallout game with an actual story with actual consequences sure.
i won’t dismiss the cruft and bugginess of the older iteration of gamebryo / creation engine but if you care about the original series, nv has much more to offer you. would be cool if nv could be forward ported to, for example, starfields engine, though it’s not like that isn’t without its limitations either.

the best way to improve fallout 4 is to play new vegas instead

you know what, I totally spaced on that. this is very likely the case for save the world as well, I’m bit aware if anyone who’s played that on Linux.

I’m not getting the impression you genuinely want to hop back in, but in case you didn’t know about it, the Heroic games launcher is FOSS, cross platform, and can serve GoG, EGS and Amazon games.
I never use it for EGS because I don’t have an epic account, but it’s been wonderful for my GoG library on Fedora.

Can you elaborate on CE SE? Is this different from the 2003 Mac port? As far as I’m aware, the port to Mac had lower resolution textures on top of certain rendering issues, poorer AI behaviour etc.

- Comment on I've been playing 'Ruby's Rebalanced HALO: CE' mod and it is fantastic. 10 months ago:
Apparently. This is reported to be a pseudo UE5 port (think Oblivion Remastered (💀)) and will be available on PlayStation. The core of the game will apparently be derived from Halo Reach’s iteration of Blam engine. The “technical details” are all just rumours and you’ve every right to disregard, though the entry coming to PS5 is more or less acknowledged.
I don’t believed a multiplayer compoment for this is planned.

ruby’s rebalanced is the only way I can play CE today via MCC.
I don’t have high hopes for 343 but I gather their CE remaster may expand upon what was available back in 2001 and reintroduce cut content.

I can’t say I’ve ever used a dualshock 2 clone, but I’ve used a sixaxis and ds3? Ergonomically they seem somewhat similar. In terms of quality, I can’t say. The controller I’ve linked is wired only, however. If that’s a dealbreaker, a company called 8bitdo make some fairly affordable wireless gamepads which are all Linux friendly (directly interpreted by steaminput)

My friends and I can play boomerang fu for hours. there’s a surprising level of depth to this deceptively cute looking game. Can get pretty competitive, but it’s always fun 😊

I’ve only recently been made aware of btrfs’ tendency to completely fuck data at failure states.
I’ve been using that filesystem on fedora for maybe two years now without issue, though I suppose I don’t regularly find myself hitting the issues required to cause these problems.
