Yeah. I have no evidence that this system invented those shortcuts, they may predate it by quite a bit

- Comment on Where did the abbreviation "w/" for "with" come from? 11 months ago:
In the Speedwriting shorthand system, developed in 1924 for use with typewriter, / Is used to denote omitted sylables, so ‘with’ becomes w/ and ‘without’ becomes w/o. Here is a pretty deep guide on the precepts of Speedwriting:
- Comment on Cockney and Queen's English have all but disappeared among young people – here's what's replaced them 1 year ago:
This is just another study confirming what has been known for years. MLE is the multicultural expansion of cockney. Much of the accent survives, but has been modified by exposure to many cultures. Its been identified as the dominant native london accent foresomething like a decade.

- Comment on What if the Gaza Strip declared independence? 1 year ago:
‘legitimate government’ isn’t really a thing. Many recognized countries are ruled by hereditary governments, or by autocrats who gained power in a coup. The legitimacy of such governments, andthe nationhood of the states, is recognized by other countries based on the foreign policy (mostly self interest) of those other countries. So, if you want to guess who would recognize a Gaza nation with Hamas as the ruling clique, ask yourself what governments would benifit from doing that.

- Comment on I don't understand the whole Twitter/Mastodon social media format 1 year ago:
At its best, twitter was group texting, but in public. its evolved into a semi-broadcast form with the expectation that many will read and few will engage, and in both twitter and mastodon the tooling is built for that.
within that, you follow people because they produce content you want, or because you intend to interact. Hashtags are there for topics you are intersted in so you can consume in a more ad-hoc way

- Comment on What the electric car transition really means for autoworkers 1 year ago:
Any time there are moving parts, there is wear. Thats how phones and vehicles will stay different? Is this example, since they determined they needed a gearbox, it makes sense to use fluid. It keeps it lubricated and cooled, extending the lifespan. Probably makes it quiter, too
- Comment on What the electric car transition really means for autoworkers 1 year ago:
This is partly true, but the comparison to motorcycles is a little off.
What will be effected is jobs on the drivetrain. A motorcycle is almost entirely drivetrain, so you would have seen the most extreme version of this change. Cars have a lot more in them: climate, seats, soundproofing, doors.
Those jobs wouldn’t be impacted by electrification. Its the automation part that is at play there.
- Comment on In the US, what happens if you sustain a life threatening injury and you don't have insurance? 1 year ago:
Emergenty rooms in hospitals are legaly required to help all patieints, so you would recieve care. Usually until you are able to leave the hospital. You would not receive followup care without going to the emergecy room, or paying cash. You would be billed for all services, usually at a higher rate than insured patients

Small nit: you don’t compute sigma, you prove a value for a given input. Sigma here is uncomputable.
