- Comment on How does a game server differentiate between multiple clients on the same network? Do they even? 3 days ago:
There’s two ports involved, the client port and the server port. Multiple clients with different client ports and the same ip can connect to the same server port, but they can’t reuse the same client side port.
The client port is usually randomly chosen by the OS networking stack, between 1024-65536.

I’d use Canada Post, except they won’t ship products internationally that contain a lipo. UPS wasn’t my first choice =(
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
Yeah, this thread has me reconsidering and thinking I should just embed the cost in shipping.
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
Those 2% were covered by the 3rd party insurance, and I send out replacements right away instead of waiting for the insurance to do their thing.
Yep you’re well within your right to do a chargeback and I’d probably have to eat the loss, but I’m not willing to ship a replacement in that case either. The insurance would ensure you get the product at the end.
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
In which case that’s bundled into the shipping cost, so you’re paying it either way at the end of the day. I could just not offer and pad the shipping rates, but opted to give my customers the choice. So far I haven’t had anyone who opted out, lose a package. Those likely to lose them, know already that their local ups is sus.
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
Given the small fee in ops screenshot, most likely. We don’t know who their shipper is.
My understanding is trying to get reimbursed by ups is also a time consuming headache. They make you wait a while, need evidence, etc etc etc. I can just ship a replacement right away and as long as the original package stays lost, I don’t have to worry about not being reimbursed.
Also ups sucks so much I’d rather give that insurance money to someone other than them.
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
Only up to a smallish amount, it’s been a few years but i think it was like $100 cad
- Comment on Hot Ones trying to sneak in the package protection 1 week ago:
For people asking what this is - for my small biz, adding insurance via ups would be about $25 per package, and 3rd party protection is about $11. I don’t make any money off this, it’s strictly to cover lost / damaged shipments.
I offer default protection on during checkout but call it out in a big obvious box, and warn that if you remove it and the package is lost then you’re out of luck. Most people leave it on, and I have about a 2% package loss rate (thanks ups) that has all been covered so far.
If I didn’t offer it via 3rd party then that $25 would be rolled into the shipping cost, so the customer is forced to pay. This way they get the option, and it saves them money.
I wish more companies would just be up front about it though, it feels deceptive when they shove it in without explaining why.
- Comment on What exactly is the security of direct messages on lemmy? Does anyone actually use matrix? 2 weeks ago:
The sending and receiving servers both get the message in plain text, so you can view them directly in the db.

- Comment on How IMDB Users Rate Season 4 of SNW 2 weeks ago:
I’ve soured on s4 too. First one was the best, second acceptable but not really trek, and it’s just been shit since.
Please just give us a final 1.5 seasons of quality fucking trek. Is that really so hard? I’m glad they’re having fun making the show, but the audience isn’t.

Sigh, I was already considering it. I’m guessing it wasn’t as good as the sg1 puppet episode either.

Can we please just have some normal trek for at least half the season?

Most modern remakes I’m pretty meh on, but I do think they nailed it with X-Com. I can’t really think of another game from my childhood that got treated properly.

It would require a warrant for police (at least here in Canada), phones contain a lot of highly personal data. Border guards have more authority but should still require some justification.
Just because he’s a dirt bag Nazi doesn’t mean we should support taking his devices and searching them, without a disclosed reason behind it.

Houston, who says he is a member of Restore Britain, has not been arrested or charged, but police confirmed his electronic devices were seized.
Not being charged with anything but still having your devices seized, is kinda BS.

Huh I had no idea we’re not allowed to feed crows.
I got dive bombed years ago one summer, after which I started bribing the crows with peanuts from my balcony. Now they’re used to me and let me get pretty close, or come hang out when I’m out there.
They’ve got babies out front of my building this week and show no interest in me or my dog, but I see them bombing other people regularly.

You can run your own mail server. I generally don’t recommend it, it’s a pain.

bruh, seriously? why would they put backdoors into an app that they open sourced + run themselves on their own infra? that’s just asking for a massive fucking headache to clean things up after someone does nefarious things to your instance.
