The moment you think you understand it, that superposition collapses and you’re back to “huh?”
Every damn time.
- Comment on Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down 3 days ago:
…yeah.
I had that thought after I replied when I realized that most of the reputable search crawlers will publish the IPs/ranges they use in addition to the UA. The disreputable ones (cough Bytedance cough Xiaomi cough) will just spoof Chrome on Windows 10.
That said, I may still continue looking into working with one of the actual search engines (vs meta search) and see how well that works.
- Comment on Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down 3 days ago:
s it because you expect other search engines to follow suit until there are no search engines anymore, only hallucination machines?
Basically, yeah.
- Comment on Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down 3 days ago:
I fear that as well. I use Searx-NG at home, so am expecting that to start dying a death of a thousand cuts soon.
Was thinking about standing up (or contributing to) either YaCY or Stract, but you made a good point about the bot allowances for the Googlebot et al crawler UAs. Wonder how frowned upon it would be to spoof the crawler UA in a self-hosted one?
- Comment on Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down 3 days ago:
Same. I don’t mind it as an option if that’s what some people want, but stop “enhancing” the default experience with it and shoving it down my throat.

On the bright side, at least it wasn’t labeled as “up to 10 bars” like ISPs get away with.

Sigh. AI has basically added a rocket booster to the enshittification train.
Hopefully this doesn’t impact DDG.

Thank gods I’m able to use Linux for my work PC. Group policy and enterprise config can only hide so much of Windows’s BS.

Microsoft needs to go back from “This Computer” to “My Computer”.
When they renamed that OS staple, it really highlighted how they see the device you paid for as theirs.
- Comment on Searching for the "most representative" Star Trek episode 6 days ago:
Yeah, same. I felt bad recommending it as “average” episode, but it checks all the other boxes. Still, it’s a fun, easy episode to just drop into without needing any background info besides “They’re on a long journey home, and then this happens”.
“The Void” is definitely a solid choice, too. Teamwork and Federation principles save the day, a little action, and a first contact.

Hey, that’s my line!
- Comment on Searching for the "most representative" Star Trek episode 1 week ago:
I think VOY - Counterpoint might fit the bill.
Reasons:
- It’s got a double double-cross plot
- It’s traditional in the “alien of the week” format.
- Janeway and Inspector Kashyk have excellent chemstry
- Hefty abuse of the pattern buffer
- Basically a self-contained episode that’s largely confined to the ship

Sure. We’ll have a coupon day or something.

The rub is you have to opt out rather than in.
- Comment on How to manage contact information between Android and Linux without any Big Tech software? 1 week ago:
I run a Nextcloud server and use DavX5 on my phone to sync my contacts and calendars over WebDAV. Works great.
If Nextcloud is more than you need, you might try Radicale which just does CalDAV and CardDAV.

But while the production shortfall underpinned the initial price gains, speculation from investors like hedge funds took things to another level.
“Yes, there’s fundamentals that trigger the move, but then these financial considerations add to it and compound to the situation.” said Judy Ganes, a commodities consultant. “It’s money driven.”
And we can charge anything we want: 2,000 a day, 10,000 a day. And people will pay it

Yeah I don’t get it either. You do you 🤷🏼♂️
As long as people aren’t trying to force their views on me (veganism, religion, what have you), I couldn’t care less.

What format does it get converted into? Can you post a link that you got back (even in the comments)?
Each instance can configure pict-rs (the media subsystem, basically) a number of different ways or even disable videos entirely (or convert them to gifs, etc).

Around 3:14, I thought they were about to start a mosh pit. lol
So many questions, though. Do cows respond to any music? Just low-frequencies? Were they just investigating a weird, non-threatening thing? Is that their favorite song? Do the farmers play at feeding time (assuming they supplement their grazing with feedstock)?
Either way, that’s cool.

- Comment on If you or somebody you know ever fell for a romance scam, how did you or the person fall for it? 2 weeks ago:
I think it was to get around embargoes? This was probably early 2000s so she was buying stuff at like Circuit City/Walmart/etc and shipping it off.
- Comment on If you or somebody you know ever fell for a romance scam, how did you or the person fall for it? 2 weeks ago:
My aunt did.
She got suspicious when her online companion kept asking her to buy stuff and ship it. She didn’t catch on immediately, and the family had to explain to her she was doing something illegal and that it was a scam (even though he was reimbursing her).
(She later did remarry a non-scammer, so happy ending I guess).

- Comment on Is it greener to just burn plastic? 2 weeks ago:
Definitely not burning it, but pyrolysis has been suggested (basically “burn” it in an oxygen-free environment).
The plastics are heated to about 500 °C in the absence of oxygen. The longer molecules break into liquid fractions like naphtha and diesel, solid cuts like waxes, and lower-molecular-weight gases. In most plants, roughly 10% of the product is char, a by-product.
It’s not without its drawbacks. Some gases are produced, and those are either burned to power the pyrolysis process or are flared off. About 10% is reduced to char and would have to be disposed of conventionally (unsure of the environmental impact of that).
I don’t have time right now to dive deep into the topic (just throwing off what I do know plus a link that explains it), but it’s possible it’s less harmful overall than just throwing it in a landfill forever.
