In Canada we have the same issue with the CBC.
The CBC also deserves criticism especially for its coverage of Israel, but the majority of the criticism comes from the right wing about CBC’s “bias”.
Now the CBC is biased, it is a liberal institution that ultimately works to reinforce the state, but that’s not the claim from the right wing. The claim from the right wing is that the CBC is a left wing institution that cannot be trusted.
With those people and criticisms, this is absolutely a move to erode trust in the public broadcaster, dismantle it, and allow fully privatised media like the USA. People like Rupert Murdoch and other billionaires in media absolutely want this. They want the mainstream right wing propaganda outlets to be the “default” (SKY news, etc in the UK) and smaller, hard right outlets to be the alternative.
The UK is facing privatisation of the NHS and multiple other institutions right now, you should expect that they’re working to privatise the BBC. For all the BBCs faults, public broadcasters are absolutely a force for (not good maybe) moderation in media. They should continue to exist, and they should be improved to further moderate/improve all media.
