- Comment on Why Are Rap*** & Ped** Protected In Jail? 7 months ago:
So, you're basically asking why we have a judicial system.
If you look at world history pretty much every human society comes up with a code of what is okay and what isn't, and once they get to a certain size they start standardizing punishments as well.
The reason for this is because it works a lot better than ad hoc justice which is too reliant on variables like who was there that day.
- Comment on David McBride: former army lawyer sentenced to five years for stealing and leaking Afghanistan war documents 7 months ago:
Not going to downvote you, partly because I only downvote spam and partly because kbin doesn't federate downvotes so I can't even see downvotes from you and vice versa.
But I fundamentally disagree. One of the lessons of Nuremberg was that obeying orders isn't a good enough reason to commit war crimes.
One of the corollaries to that, for me, is that obeying rules isn't a good enough reason to be complicit in covering up war crimes either.
If a secret is a crime it's more treasonous to keep it a secret, because the people of our nations haven't voted to leave the Geneva Conventions and go out and commit war crimes.
- Comment on David McBride: former army lawyer sentenced to five years for stealing and leaking Afghanistan war documents 7 months ago:
The material was used as the basis for an investigative series exposing war crimes committed by Australian defence personnel in Afghanistan.
If it's war crimes the good of humanity should come above the good of a regime committing war crimes.

This. There's nothing in western news media about domestic issues in China. If
@PumpkinDrama wants to know more they should look for books or articles about Chnese protests such as the anti PX protests and the anti nuclear plant protests.

Unlikely. Jackson is Darth Vader to Warners Palpatine.
He literally lobbied the New Zealand Government to change the labour laws to avoid paying his employees any benefits on The Hobbit movies (they became "independent contractors" so no sick pay, job security, or holiday pay).
Actors Guild went on strike over it. If anything, Jackson will be the one using Weta to create AI actors.

I think they were objecting to the phrase "few and far between".
You really can't use it to describe a situation of almost 2 in 5.
If 2 in every 5 cars you see are red you can't say red cars are few and far between.
- Comment on [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism? 7 months ago:
Well it's like the old joke says,
Q: how do you know someone's a vegan?
A: OH, THEY'LL TELL YOU.
Seriously tho I don't have a problem with them unless they start saying there's no difference betwern killing an animal and torturing it.
- Comment on Sadiq Khan wins third term as London mayor saying he answered 'hate with hope' 7 months ago:
Ha ha ha no.
You're probably thinking about the time he had a disagreement with a Rabbi over the fact that he called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
His conservative opponent in the mayoral race tried to parlay that into a thing but she had to apologize in the end.

Based on my observations (of various old people in my life) of what works and what doesn't:
-
continue to gather and use evidence to make decisions
-
continue to be open minded to new ideas and new evidence
-
recognise your blind spots and have trusted people in your life to help with decisionmaking in those areas

- Comment on Doesn't the need for a permit fundamentally contradict the US's ideals of free speech? 7 months ago:
There's no such thing as free speech as an absolute in practice.
For example patents, IP, defamation laws, copyright, state secrets, sealed courts, false advertising laws, all these things create limits to speech in the US.

Pretty sure it's because this community's mods repurposed movies@lemm.ee after they had a falling out with the mod at moviesandtv@lemm.ee. So the content here is for both mediums.
If you don't like seeing tv content there are film-only communities like movies@lemmy.world, the much smaller movies@kbin.social and a whole lot of niche communities for trailers, full films, etc. I keep a list, hit me up if you want it.

When STEM people hear "arts" they think of making pictures, but in an academic context Fine arts are not part of any Faculty of Arts.
The actual meme is about writing shitty last-minute essays and most AI writes exactly like a HASS undergraduate.
- Comment on this one goes out to the arts & humanities 8 months ago:
Pretty sure whoever wrote the meme is talking about essay writing in Arts/Humanities, (not the disciplines where you draw and paint etc which are Fine Arts and are not Faculty of Arts in an academic context.

If it had happened like in the 1980s or something it would have been forgiveable but it was like 2006 or something, at that point we all already knew climate change was real.

On kbin we can see who upvoted and that takes a lot of the frustration and paranoia away.
There have been times when it turns out to be, say, the OP is upvoting all comments on their post and someone is being upvoted by someone they are arguing with and then one of the others is someone I often see upvoting trolls on .world or whatever.

This is probably why crocs are so popular.
I own a pair a couple of sizes too large for winter, so that I can step into them without even taking my slippers off.

- Comment on In movies a strong woman is manly. (big muscles, aggressive, punches people, etc.) Is that really the way it is? 8 months ago:
I agree with you, but I was thinking in terms of aggression and physicality, particularly in Alien 2 and 4. Similarly someone like Clarice Starling is smart and determined but physical prowess and aggresive assertiveness are a core part of her success.
I think Final Girls are probably what OP has in mind when they say determination in movies = physical strength.

New Zealand here, I've only had it once in the last 5 years and it was awesome, they turned out to be from a doomsday cult that believes God is a living Korean woman or something like that.
- Comment on In movies a strong woman is manly. (big muscles, aggressive, punches people, etc.) Is that really the way it is? 8 months ago:
Strength of character for men and women is the same. It is a basic trait of all human beings. Same with strength of purpose. However, how it gets expressed is different depending on the social and cultural situation they are in at the time.
That can relate to gender because some situations are gendered (for example, women are more likely to be in those situations).
In some movies, it is shown as muscles, aggressive etc. Eg Alien. In other movies it is shown in other ways.
Some examples:
The Color Purple
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
Once Were Warriors
Fire by Deepa Mehta
Rabbit Proof Fence
Daughters of the Dust
Whale Rider
