- Comment on McDonald's franchisee group says new $20 minimum wage California fast-food bill will cause 'devastating financial blow' 1 year ago:
Not the way their business works… I think that franchising is an innately predatory business model and in need of severe legal reform. Let’s not ask McD to do it, let’s make them

In this case, the franchisees (small business owners) are saying the big business (McDonalds, which makes its money off of real estate and franchise fees) is going to be fine but they (the people that make money from owning a restaurant) are in trouble.
For many of them, it’s true; they didn’t consider whether they could open this business if they had to pay a living wage. Unfortunately, that’s not our problem, but it won’t be a problem for McDonalds either.

To be fair, the Romans also had a lot of concrete that is not with us today, there’s a bit of survivorship bias going on here.

I’ve got chestnut trees in my yard, but they’re Japanese chestnuts – yours might be, too.

My dad has been obsessed with this my whole life. The dude just really likes American chestnut trees. He’s part of an advocacy organization that is testing blight resistant genetic hybrids, and planting chestnuts in their yards to preserve them in the meantime.

Went to see the Barbie movie a couple days ago. This woman had brought her 2-3 year old kid, who started crying.
… so she turned on an iPad and started playing an episode of Paw Patrol for the kid.
I told the staff, they warned her … twice… then eventually escorted her out. I guess the ladies behind her had told her to hush, because she threatened to wait for them in the parking lot and “beat their sorry asses.”
Which she did (wait, that is… the cops came and escorted those ladies home).
I’ve never seen such total dedication to being an asshole.

Just watched it, gotta say I really enjoyed it. I thought it was smart and fun – I am not super familiar with the toys but I feel like if I were, there would have been a lot of Easter eggs.

Yep. It’s why companies can offer ridiculous salaries and still have crazy employee churn (see: amazon, tesla).

Right… “perform an actual exit interview” would be good

So… this is pretty stupid, a raise in pay certainly might help.
However, from the perspective of a career spent managing teams, often organizations with hundreds of employees, if you think your people are all solely motivated by compensation, you’re going to do a very poor job as a manager.
Everyone wants more money, but that’s not all they want – and there are plenty of people who quit high paying jobs that treated them poorly or gave them no opportunity to grow.
Think about appropriate compensation as necessary, but often not sufficient – and think about the best boss you ever had. They probably did more than just pay you fairly, that’s the bare minimum.
