Any party like the Greens has to be perfect to gain any chance at taking power. They’ve got the right and far right against them, the neolibs, enlightened centrists, center-left, the establishment, and the vast majority of corporate media all waiting for any sign of weakness.

NG or hydrogen peaker plants, hydro, tidal, flywheels, etc.
To be clear, I am in favor of importing electricity across borders but if most of Europe is affected by Dunkelflaute then I don’t think it would be sufficient. Let’s hope for the best and plan for the worst.

That’s why I included storage in my comment. Wind and solar are very predictable across a longer time frame.
The UK has periods where there is not enough wind or sun or battery storage to sustain demand.

This was one or the few areas I didn’t align with the Green Party before, as I believe that a bit of nuclear is kind of necessary to help round out less consistent energy sources as things stand. I think this is a reasonable stance.
Not to be too much of a dick but this is pretty typical of the pro-new nuclear mindset.
You “believe”? You don’t have to believe, there is plenty of hard data showing that new nuclear is a massive waste of money now renewables and storage are so cheap.

It’s not, unless you want to pay more for electricity for absolutely no reason other than because you feel like you should.

I heard someone describe LLMs as useful in the context of being handy plugins which tallies with what you’re saying. In certain situations they’re useful. The problem is that they’re being completely misrepresented and sold as being able to do things that they can’t do consistently or well so the hype and astronomical sums of money being thrown around is problematic.

I suspect part of it is that every company wants to be the one to outlast the competition and become the de facto AI company everyone uses. They want to be the 90’s Microsoft of AI. To this end, they’re all setting fire to giant piles of money.
Maybe I’m wrong but even if one clear winner emerges, I don’t see AI becoming that big of a market. They’re trying the heroin dealer approach of giving away cheap or free product so they can get people hooked and then jack up the prices on a bunch of people who will lie, cheat, and steal to get their next fix. Except AI slop isn’t heroin, it’s just slop.
Slop that produces inaccurate results and then tells you it did no such thing.
