  if you’re just trying to play old games, nearly all of them are capable enough to run emulators up to ps1. pick the one that supports the controls you want or is in the form factor you find the most comfortable.

  so many people on r/retrohandhelds fall into the trap of turning these shovelware devices into their hobby and owning like 15 of them. you need one… the rest are e-waste.

  imo this and the enshittification of games are symptoms of the same root cause. games are too big and expensive now. one auteur on a 1000 person team can’t have the same level of impact as one auteur on a 10 person team. they definitely have fewer opportunities to develop their reputation/skill/style on big teams

  yes, i think flappy bird had a really elegant onboarding/tutorial: 1. main menu screen, tap to start 2. the tap flaps the bird 3. you fall to the ground, learning that you need to repeatedly tap to fly 4. before any obstacles appear, you get some time to calibrate your rhythm 5. obstacles start appearing and the game starts
