Being an asshole to someone you love because you didn’t take a beat to calm down after something stressful.
- Comment on How do we know that the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle is preserved across radius sizes? 2 weeks ago:
We know the circumference of a circle is 2 * pi * Radius (c = 2 * pi * r). The diameter of a circle is 2 * Radius (d = 2 * r). Therefore the circumference of a circle is pi * Diameter (c = pi * d). The ratio between circumference and diameter is pi, which is a constant and therefore doesn’t change even when radius size changes.
How do we know Pi? We have literally known about it for so long that no one has an historical account of who first conceived of it. The oldest example we have is from Babylon, and even then we don’t think they discovered it just that they were aware of it. www.britannica.com/science/pi-mathematics
- Comment on Why isn’t "Democrats would never get away with this" seen as a problem for the left?” 2 weeks ago:
I interpret that sentiment completely differently from how you seem to. “Democrats would never get away with this” to me is not a statement about the Republican Party’s ability to wield power more effectively than Democrats, rather it is a statement about how Democratic Politicians and their constituents would never allow their leaders to behave the way Republican leaders do. Respect and belief in the core principles of American democracy, rather than a willingness to use technicalities and loopholes to win at any cost, is required and expected of Democrats by democrats in a way that is is not expected of or by Republicans.

TLDR: Depends on a person’s personal situation but generally the more power someone has the more of an obligation they have to speak up and do something. —————- I think it’s dependent on the individual’s situation. Most people don’t have the platform or personal power to move the needle on nativism. If we use the recent unrest in LA as an example someone would need to consider the weight their presence would contribute to the cause against the likelihood of their being singled out and targeted by the government. What are the ramifications of their staying silent versus having that attention on them, their families and their community.
If you’re talking about those with platform and power then we can add an argument about the responsibility of those with privilege. We have a lot of pretty famous arguments for that example in favor of them being morally obligated to use it. The old school take is noblesse oblige, or noble obligation, while a modern version of the same sentiment would be “with great power comes great responsibility” from spider man.
