- Comment on Looking for a way to make a proportional timeline out of an Excel or CSV file 59 minutes ago:
I would do something similar to what you did: create a scatter plot using the years as your x-axis to make the spacing between them proportional, hide the y-axis, but also add labels to the date and event columns whose data you are using for your chart so that Excel can automatically update the data labels to the chart in case you change or add any events.

- Comment on If suffering is good because it gives life meaning, wouldn't it follow that hurting people is good? 6 days ago:
“Your Honor, I was only trying to make his life more meaningful” doesn’t really hold up well in court.
I would argue that challenges are a part of what give life meaning rather than suffering because they can teach us resourcefulness, resilience, gratitude, and provide a sense of accomplishment after completion. But challenges don’t have to include suffering, and the meaning isn’t always a positive thing.
Ultimately it’s up to each individual to decide what gives their life meaning. Who’s to say everything needs to have a meaning anyway? .

There are valid reasons for disliking AI (rather, how it’s being used) and I’ll upvote when a relevant, informed argument is made against it. Otherwise I’ll mentally filter out the low-effort comments that just say “fuck AI” with dozens of upvotes.

That’s like saying “you can’t fire me, I quit!”. Better to either accept it and be happy to have a good friend, or limit contact with that person if you find it hard to be around them knowing that they’re not romantically/sexually interested.

- Comment on Are there any AI services that don't work on stolen data? 2 weeks ago:
Some machine learning models are trained on what’s called synthetic data, which is generated specifically for that purpose and mimics real-world data. What I don’t know is how much of the data used is synthetic vs. stolen.

If you feel highly confident that you don’t want children now or in the future, that is reason enough to have a vasectomy. You have the option of freezing your sperm too in case you have doubts but still want to go through with the procedure now.

Ooh, that looks good. I had to look up how it looks. I learned to cook a lot of new different things simply because I wanted foods that are extremely uncommon where I live.

It must be so nice to have a variety of high quality breads to choose from. Authentic whole grain and rye breads are hard to find in my country. I’m sure Americans have access to different types of artisan breads, but the type used in fast food seems horribly over-processed and sugary.
Even with good bread, I like to be able to taste all the ingredients in the sandwich. Higher ingredient-to-bread ratios.

Haha, I love how enthusiastic and forgiving OP is when it comes to these things. I’ve never had one, but higher prices and less ingredients/filling seems to be an unfortunate trend everywhere. Most sandwiches I see lately are 90% bread.

Heat pumps first extract heat from the outside air before moving it indoors (I don’t know the exact mechanics of it). The colder it is outside, the more energy is needed to do this. When it’s cooling, it only moves the heat from inside to outside.
- Comment on [deleted] 2 weeks ago:
They’re great, aren’t they?
Heat pumps normally use more electricity to heat than to cool, so it’s surprising that the opposite was happening for you.
My bills have always been lower in the summer. The only time the bills have been unusually high was when there was a problem with the connection between the main electrical supply and the pump, causing it to keep restarting and use more energy.
- Comment on What companies manufacture ancient musical instruments? 2 weeks ago:
My guess is that many ancient instruments would be custom ordered from a luthier or other craftsman who specializes in a specific group of instruments. It would help to know which instrument you are looking for or which region it comes from.

- Comment on I turned 30 yesterday but I look 18. Nobody believes me when I tell them my age. What do I do? Do I date a 20 year old guy or a 35 year old guy who looks twice my age? 3 weeks ago:

My suggestion would be to date whoever you like and have a good connection with without worrying how it will be perceived by others.
- Comment on You don’t see articles like this about moms with three two jobs who still manage to take care of their kids. 3 weeks ago:
It’s short-sighted not to realize that treating people with dignity will improve their motivation and productivity. My work also has a generous policy for time off, but my colleagues are still considerate when they use it by making sure the important things are done before they leave and that the rest of us will be able to handle things in their absence. There will always be a handful of people who abuse the privilege, but they need to be dealt with individually.
From my observation, the types to work late and have no time off either take an immense satisfaction in working or are avoiding something to come home to.

What’s infuriating is that having no work-life balance is promoted as a positive. Sure there are people who are really devoted to their work and thrive on it, but that should be seen as voluntary and not expected. Working long hours also doesn’t necessarily mean you are working efficiently or using your full potential the entire time.

- Comment on What is the difference between a platonic and a romantic relationship? 3 weeks ago:
Generally speaking, I would define romantic relationships as those where attraction is experienced (not necessarily acted upon) and where there is exclusivity, with the exception of non-monogamous relationships. A good relationship should have all the benefits of friendship, but also a mutual desire, often sex and other intimate touch, and the expectation that you will reserve those feelings and contact for each other.
