Actually there is an episode of VOY that proves they did evolve a special brian region to supress emotions

And yet oddly enough that is not the issue with the Section 31 movie
- Comment on Vulcans are an incredibly emotional and passionate species. 2 weeks ago:
Yeah true, I suppose that kind of defeats my whole idea that Vulcans would self-destruct if they allowed emotions to control them.
- Comment on Vulcans are an incredibly emotional and passionate species. 2 weeks ago:
I haven’t seen the episode yet that I think you’re alluding to, but yes Vulcans have always been presented as having a kind of Buddhist-style philosophy with the important qualification that they would literally destroy themselves as an advanced race without it. The “religion” is an important social technology to enable them to explore the cosmos.
It’s obviously alluding to humans too, if we can’t control our innate animal reactions like tribalism and greed then we too will not be able to harness our own (physical) technology without self-destructing.

I agree the Gamble plot was great and the actor nailed it.

They wanted to avoid another entrance/exit on screen to keep us guessing how this Star Trek Inception works.
I understand the reasoning from a suspense perspective but manufactured suspense does not feel suspenseful. Think about it: why show the entire long debate about leaving or not if none of them actually care? The only thing that makes sense is that once they understood the danger was real there was an off-camera conversation with Pike or Una wherein Pike or Una presumably told them that the danger was acceptable and to proceed. But if we accept that the conversation happened off-camera, then the presence of the debate scene doesn’t make sense from a storytelling standpoint.

Can anyone with Bazzite experience tell me how it handles games with third party launchers like EA or Ubisoft? You can’t seem to be able to escape those these days and they are buggy even on Windows so I don’t have high hopes for Linux.

Inner Light is a good choice. It demonstrates the “vibe” of TNG without relying heavily on any pre existing characters.

Are we watching the same movies because the criticisms I usually hear leveled at the TOS films are that they are too philosophical and boring

- Comment on Study: Social media probably can’t be fixed 5 weeks ago:
It worries me that there are scientists out there who are making studies based on the assumption that an LLM chat bot is a reasonable stand-in for a human in this context (in any context really but that’s another conversation). It’s just not what LLMs are, it’s not what they are designed to do. They’ve fallen for the marketing.
- Comment on Study: Social media probably can’t be fixed 5 weeks ago:
We address this question using a novel method - generative social simulation - that embeds Large Language Models within Agent-Based Models to create socially rich synthetic platforms. We create a minimal platform where agents can post, repost, and follow others. We find that the resulting following-networks reproduce three well-documented dysfunctions: (1) partisan echo chambers; (2) concentrated influence among a small elite; and (3) the amplification of polarized voices - creating a ‘social media prism’ that distorts political discourse.
- lmao "generative AI chatbots trained on social media behave like social media users"
- Shame on ArsTechnica they should be better than to publish a study like this.

That’s all LLM software is, it has no connection to reality, it’s bullshitting 100% of the time. The fact that it is correct mostly, or confident always does not imply that it understands anything it’s saying.

I don’t think it’s as lousy as most people remember. Just that S1 can feel a bit of a letdown coming off of Voyager Season 7.
