Donation supported journalism works well for NPR.
I can imagine an ecosystem in which enough people give their $50/month streaming subscriptions directly to artists and journalists.

Siri is bad but at least it has natural language processing. I think it’s so funny how CEOs have no idea how LLMs work.
Over a year ago Apple literally ran an ad showing off an “Apple Intelligence” feature that you could tell nobody at Apple ran by the actual engineers before deciding it was possible. It (of course) has still not been released.

Consider yourself blessed to be unaware of the entire digital media ecosystem that targets insecure white men via their preferred fandoms and is dedicated to blaming women and minorities for their issues.

This is hilarious to me so I looked up the original article and I am pretty sure that it is largely written by AI.
Also, not that it needs or deserves any kind of analysis, but the central premise (as much as I can decipher from all the ChatGPT fluff) appears to be: “Because Trekkies are conservative, Star Trek is doing everything it can to make men hate it.” which obviously makes no sense. Why would a company create a piece of media knowing it would be unpopular?
Anyway thanks for the laugh, OP.

Thankfully I don’t think economic demand for AI generated visuals is nearly as high as the human crafted variety

That’s really astute, I’ve never seen that comparison drawn so directly. It’s the same situation with the people who claim that AI “democratizes” art by allowing someone to have a “work” of art without putting in the work of creating which is what makes a work a thing to be desired in the first place.

Thanks, I fixed my comment, the article said “similar to that found in the Kindle Colorsoft” and I didn’t read further.
- Comment on Aura introduces a $499 e-ink digital photo frame that lets you go cordless 1 week ago:
This is really cool, I love that it has a gentle front light. But pricing aside, having to take off the wall to charge every three months is a dealbreaker. I wonder if a solar panel along the top edge of the frame would have been sufficient to keep the battery charged for most situations.
Regardless I hope we see more of these. Even if the Kaleido screen is FAR from photo quality.

If you describe a female character who’s not a Mary Sue as a Mary Sue for no reason other than because you don’t like her, people will think you’re sexist.

I was struggling to think of a character that was presented as “flawless” and Saru is the closest I could think of. I cannot conceive of a definition of “Mary Sue” that would apply to characters that that go to prison for mutiny. If Micheal meets the definition of a “Mary Sue” then Kirk, Sisko, Riker, Scotty, Wesley and Tom Paris do too but I suspect you would disagree with those being included.

Someone once told me that Discovery had a “storyline” about a character coming out as nonbinary I asked them if they could tell me what episodes this storyline took place or provide any details from this story. Of course they could not but they remained fully convicted that it did happen.

Mary Sue
Is this a reference to Saru? Because I would argue strongly that he does not meet the definition of the term “Mary Sue”:
“exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. […] lacks any realistic character flaws”
Saru was gifted and possessed “rare skills” yes, but was not without character flaws. For starters he sided with Burhnam during her mutiny and subsequent imprisonment.

Yeah when someone complains that Discovery redesigned the Klingons but won’t complain about TNG redesigning the Klingons then you can know that they don’t actually have strong opinions about the concept of a redesign.

Finally, something substantial. I was worried this would be “Star Trek: High School Musical” but this trailer makes it clear this isn’t just a Trek show for tweens and teens.

This quote from Ford’s CEO:
“It’s going to be a vibrant industry, but it’s going to be smaller, way smaller than we thought,” Ford chief executive Jim Farley said at an event on Tuesday.
Combined with the following quote he recently said:
Speaking on the Everything Electric Show podcast, Farley praised the [Xiaomi] electric sedan. “I don’t like talking about the competition so much, but I drive a Xiaomi,” he said. “We flew one from Shanghai to Chicago, and I’ve been driving it for six months now, and I don’t want to give it up.”
Really feels like Kodak in the 90’s.

Yeah true, I suppose that kind of defeats my whole idea that Vulcans would self-destruct if they allowed emotions to control them.
- Comment on Vulcans are an incredibly emotional and passionate species. 1 month ago:
I haven’t seen the episode yet that I think you’re alluding to, but yes Vulcans have always been presented as having a kind of Buddhist-style philosophy with the important qualification that they would literally destroy themselves as an advanced race without it. The “religion” is an important social technology to enable them to explore the cosmos.
It’s obviously alluding to humans too, if we can’t control our innate animal reactions like tribalism and greed then we too will not be able to harness our own (physical) technology without self-destructing.
