i was so confused when i visited a friend in kentucky and they were talking about the lightning bugs and how pretty they are.
they were dumbfounded when i had never heard of them; they talked for the rest of the day about how much awe i would he in once i saw them.
… they were fireflies. i had to pretend like it was the most amazing thing i had ever seen because i told them i hadnt even heard of them before.

so he has a stable job that helps children (and by proxy their families) with daily life. that sounds pretty hot to me?

if a game company doesnt support me, then i dont support the game company.
fomo is hard to get over at first, but after missing out and realizing its nbd you will realize that companies attempting to enforce behavior you disagree with will no longer be able to hold you hostage.
- Comment on Zuckerberg says people without AI glasses will be at a disadvantage in the future 5 weeks ago:
The glasses let users listen to music, take photos or videos, and ask Meta AI questions…
so… there is no benefit to wearing them.
i would love a new technology that does something groundbreaking (though only if it has an open source equivalent; im not buying anything from facebook), but this doesnt seem like it.

- Comment on How did you decide what you generally wanted to do with your life? 5 weeks ago:
through k-12 i wanted to be a pilot because my grandfather flew a plane as a hobby.
in college, i bounced between pilot, music composition, auto mechanics, musical theatre.
dropped out of college and did hairnet & nametag jobs for a while and asked my uncle to get me a gig as an associate PA for movies (but he wouldnt even return my call).
a friend of mine worked for a video game company and said he’d hire me to be on the phones because i just needed work, so i decided to do that for a year or two…
i worked at that company for 14 years moving from customer service to QA to software engineering. now working as a software engineer for a boring non-game company.
its not necessarily what i want to do, but it pays the bills and i dont mind being bored with it for another 23ish years until i retire.
#adulthood :/

- Comment on How to play games from GOG and Epic Games on Linux, SteamOS and Steam Deck 2 months ago:
lutris definitely takes the cake when it comes to customizability, but i consider it a bit hard on the UX… especially for new users.
i always recommend Heroic first, and if there are problems then one can use lutris (or bottles in really bad situations) as a backup.

honestly, my rust comment was mostly a joke; rust is great for it, but its readability is really bad. i’m not a huge fan of writing/reading it, just using it.

as an engineer, a lot of languages (even proprietary ones) have a built-in constant pi variable because it is so ubiquitous - its easier and more readable to use pi than 3…
- Comment on What are some good places/activities where a middle-aged man can new make friends? 2 months ago:
usually a band plays for ~30-45m - enjoying music time - and ~15m-1h (depending on the setup for that night) of downtime for chatting.
- Comment on What are some good places/activities where a middle-aged man can new make friends? 2 months ago:
as one with limited mobility, i have made friends at the local, extremely small, music venue. tickets at the door are $20, beer is cheap, and everyone is super friendly.
because its a small place, the owner lets me take a chair with me when i am going to one of the stages that has no seating (i use a cane; its hard to stand for long periods). i usually sit next to the merch tables, and the friends of the bands usually strike up conversation.
this is a suuuuuper small place. it has 2-3 stages (depending on the night), but they are really close together, so only one band at a time can play (two stages are outside because the building is so small). even if its not music, go to really small local places that get decent crowds - they are a lot more personable.
