June 26th, 2025: The Spice is Right
- Brush: Grizzly Bay - Chisel & Hound v24 Fanchurian Badger
- Razor: Gillette - Rocket HD
- Blade: Personna Lab Blue (2)
- Lather: Westman - Bastardo - Soap
- Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Master - Recovery Splash
- Fragrance: Armani - ACQUA DI GIÒ PROFONDO - EdP
$discord
Theme: Scent notes for Westman Bastardo: Bay Leaf, Orange, Rum accord, Spices, Woods, Vanilla, Patchouli. The Master continues the spiced theme with hints of tarragon, coriander, holy basil, and sweet bay. It’s a great spicy barbershop vibe.
Challenge: For today’s song I picked Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver (link). My wife and I danced to this song at our wedding for our first dance. We spent a couple of months taking dance lessons and practicing a choreographed routine. Not something I thought I’d ever do, that’s for sure.
$SELFCARE - I was supposed to commute into work today, but decided to work from home instead. I have a flight this evening and wanted to help my wife get our apartment tidied up before we leave for the trip. Sometimes, self-care is creating the space you need to meet your responsibilities.
$FOF - Bastardo into The Master felt like a natural and spicy scent progression. ACQUA DI GIÒ PROFONDO from Armani is described as:
A fougère aromatic aquatic scent with notes of fresh green mandarin and marine notes, spicy nuances of aromatic essences, a woody mineral dry-down that gets softened with patchouli & musk.
Although it does have "spicy nuances of aromatic essences (whatever that means), it doesn’t fit with the soap and splash. Honestly, the move from spicy into aquatic felt pretty jarring. Not a combo I’d use again.

Theme: This was a smush from u/josiguuh, who is very much participating in the games. Thank you for sending me this soap and the 3d-printed razor. I appreciate having you around.
Challenge: If I could design a soap, I think I’d go for a straight strong anise. Think Stirling Black Ice without the menthol. I know that Stirling did an Anise soap, but I’ve never seen it for sale.
I just want my face to smell like black licorice, hopefully without frag burn or a ton of menthol.
$SELFCARE - Today I followed through and told my boss that I’m giving them two week’s notice. I’m feeling a whole range of emotions about this, especially because I don’t have anything else lined up yet, but I know that it’s ultimately the right decision for my well-being.
$FOF - The soap doesn’t really fit, but Proraso Red into Stirling Gentleman was an outstanding combination. The warm sandalwood from the splash played wonderfully with the tobacco, amber, and vanilla in Stirling Gentleman. An excellent combination to wind down with at the end of a long day.

Theme: All my software is unscented. Thanks for the smush u/hugbckt. The soap was pretty mid (imo) but gave me a great shave in the end.
Challenge: I haven’t been around long enough to see many bases come and go. I have used BaM Soft Heart, and it’s certainly a great base. I’m not sure whether it’s much better than their current offerings though.
I do wish Talent Soap Factory was still doing their previous base that included sweet almond oil. It’s a better base than the mango butter one.
It’s difficult to pick favorite bases – we’re truly spoiled for choice. My current favorite is a toss-up between Mike’s, Stirling, and Catie’s Bubbles premium. All excellent performers at an excellent price.
$SELFCARE - I’m pretty sure I made the decision to quit my job today. Feels like self-care to me.
$FOF - All unscented is boring, so I added Molecule 01 at the end. This is a fun fragrance, as it really does fade in and out and change quite a bit while on skin.
I genuinely have a hard time smelling the fragrance when I wear this, but my wife picks up on a strong cedar/pine/woodiness when I wear it. This was the end of my little decant, unsure whether I like this enough to buy more.

Initial note: hazelnut, lemon, orange, lime
Heart note: cedar, clove, rose, lily of the valley
Final note: oak, pine, patchouli, eucalyptusChallenge: Busted out the MMOC for the single pass challenge. Unsurprisingly I had great (DFS+) results. Once you get the hang of it, this is one efficient and comfortable razor.
$SELFCARE - I took a sick day from work today mostly just because I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and that this position/company isn’t right for me. It was nice to take a slower day. I also spent some time looking at job postings to start seeing what’s out there right now.
$FOF - Phantom of Kyiv is a mostly bright scent. I pick up a soft mix of orange, lemon, rose, and pine. It feels fresh and a little floral, with a nice lightness to it.
Next, I layered on Tres Matres, which adds more complexity while still keeping things bright. It has notes like pink grapefruit, green mango, yuzu, bergamot, aldehydes, elemi, freesia, jasmine, cedarwood, and sandalwood. The citrus and light woods create a nice balance between the fresh vibe of Phantom of Kyiv and the darker scent that comes after.
Finally, I finished with Varen. It’s deep, green, and earthy, with lots of oakwood and a damp forest feel. It really grounds everything and shifts the whole blend in a darker, more intense direction.

After a shitty pharmacy shave cream shave for LG, I decided to try out this new Australian sheep tallow soap to finish the job.
Outback is scented with sandalwood, patchouli, bergamot, and cedarwood. I mostly get the cedarwood and sandalwood. It’s fairly mild but develops nicely when lathered.
The soap performed excellently. Easy to lather, took as much water as I wanted to give it, and great slickness (primary and residual). I’m looking forward to more folks getting to try this out!

Theme: All of my software for today’s shave is vegan. SW gave a great lather as always, I’m grateful to own a few tubs of their soap.
Challenge: For today’s shave, I compared my Gillette Super Speed Black Tip with my English-made Gillette Rocket HD. I used the Rocket HD on the right side of my face and the Black Tip on the left. Three passes on either side, and both razors had a new Personna Lab Blue blade.
Tag justifications:
$ALLNATURAL - My C&H handle has an ivory ferrule.
$RUSTYBUTTRUSTY - My Rocket HD was visible plating wear and patina.
These two razors have basically the same (brass) head. However, my Black Tip’s handle is made out of aluminum and plastic, while the HD’s is plated brass, so the main difference between the two is weight and balance. Overall, I got a closer and more comfortable shave today with the Rocket HD. The greater weight, and in particular the heavier handle, both give the razor a more confident feel. That said, both razors performed very well.
$SELFCARE - Today I went for a run before work, took a full hour for lunch, and spent some quiet time reading a book and hanging with our cats. It can often feel hard to find time to carve out for myself during the day, but I’m always glad when I do.
$FOF - Grave Fruit is a complex scent. The notes I could find list Yuzu, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Cedar, Green Mango, Vetiver, Freesia, Aldehydes, Ho Wood, Sandalwood, Elemi, Frankincense, Pear, Costus Root, and Sambac. 15 scent notes! I would say that I mostly pick up on the grapefruit, bergamot, and pear while using this. Cubebe brought a nice light floral note that helped to soften the citrus, and Crangere finished the progression with a sharp shock of cranberry that quickly fades into a warm, woody fougere.
I expected these scents to work well together, but was surprised by just how well they meshed. I’ll have to revisit this another day.

$FOF - Atriox is a dupe of Brut by Faberge. A soft, smooth and, dare I say, elegant barbershop-y scent, it nicely rounded out the bright grapefruit and orange in Arkadia. It’s a classic scent for a reason. Thanks for the bottle u/pridetwo!

$FOF - Oud 27, which was an anniversary gift from my wife, is a real stanky funky oud scent. It plays really nicely with the sandalwood in Proraso Red and the green/powder vibe of Skin Bracer. I love the progression of this scent. It starts super animalic and funky and fades into a lovely warm spiciness. I may have to grab a full bottle of the frag when this decant is finished.

Theme justification: Arko is the cheapest lather in my den by a decent margin. It’s currently about $1.24 per shave stick if you buy a box of 12. Daily challenge: Evenything else in this shave is also the cheapest that I own:
This brush was $4 on Amazon and is the worst brush I’ve ever used. I almost don’t believe it’s badger. Full disclosure that I stole bmac’s picture of the Amazon listing, it seems their badger brush option isn’t currently available.
I usually kind of like the scent of Arko, but all I smelled during this shave was the stink of shitty animal hair. I also probably lost 25 hairs from the brush during the shave. I’m very tempted to throw this away, but might keep it around just for next year’s LG.
Stetson Cooling Moisture is the cheapest bottle of aftershave I own. I got it for $7.20 for 3.4 oz. of splash. It’s very slightly mentholated, and likely full of shit that I don’t want on my face all the time, but it’s a classic scent and is pretty mild on the skin.
And finally the razor is 3d-printed and cost u/josiguuh about $0.18 to make.
$FOF - Agua de Colonia Concentrada actually works really nicely with the lemon scent from Arko. The scent is super pleasant for the 20-30 minutes that it lasts.
It’s also the least expensive fragrance that I own, at about $20 a bottle. $SELFCARE - I was supposed to run today, but rested instead to give my back a chance to heal after tweaking it yesterday. I’m also off to a solstice party this evening with a bunch of our local friends. Should be a nice opportunity to unwind, catch up, and celebrate one of the longest days of the year.

Theme justification: First in with Elysian. Thanks to u/socialkittielynx for the smush! I enjoy this base, and the scent is a smooth, comforting, and not-too-sweet fig.
Daily challenge: Our apartment building was built in ~1915, and our actual apartment is quite small. In the bathroom, we have one of those old school standalone medicine cabinets with a mirror. It’s kind of a bummer for shaving, since the sink is against another wall on the other side of that door.
On top of this is where I store my brushes (1 2). My DE/SE razor collection fits inside the cabinet (for now!). Most of my soaps and aftershaves are stored in one of those hanging shoe racks on the back of our bathroom door. Usually, there’s a towel hanging there. I’ve also taken over the bottom shelf of another bathroom cabinet with fragrances and a bit of overflow.
Blade bank and hanging strop both live in the bathroom as well.
I have one box of samples, one with cheap soap and blades, and a stack of overflow samples/smushes on my desk – which I should have tidied but didn’t. Here’s one of my assistants criticizing the desk situation.
Last but not least, we have extra storage for razor/brush boxes and my Moarteen (only straight razor so far). The boxes are here because I don’t have space elsewhere, and the razor I want to keep as dry as possible.
$FOF - Green Fig and DFTR both lean into the sweet green fig with hints of tobacco, musk, and woods. Egoiste then carries this sweetness into a warm, rich, and spicy glow. Mandarin, hints of rose, cinnamon, sandalwood, and just a touch of vanilla. Easily one of my favorite fragrances, and it played wonderfully with the soap and splash.
$SELFCARE - I had been considering shaving today with: bacon grease, Pepto Bismol, fertility lubricant, and egg whites. While I was trying to decide what to do yesterday, I realized that I didn’t want to rub any of that shit on my face. Instead, I choose to use something that I enjoy, because I would rather take care of myself.

Theme justification: I grew up in northeast Ohio. For a few years, my grandparents organized a family reunion of sorts on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie. We’d all stay in these little cabins surrounded by flowers and fruit trees. We’d spend long summer days walking down to the beach or exploring the woods around the cabins.
The label art for TSF Kittyhawk brings me right back to those summers on Kelleys Island. To running around in the dusky evening as fireflies blinked in and out in the warm summer air, to the sound of music and laughter filtering out of the old wooden cabins. It’s the only label I own that immediately brings me back to a singular time and place. Just lovely.

$FOF - I get orange, salt, juniper, and some other fruitiness from Kittyhawk. This played nicely with the grapefruit, mango, and jasmine in Gravefruit II. Arance Mandarini (a dupe of Tom Ford’s Mandarino di Amalfi) finishes out the progression with bright notes of orange blossom, grapefruit, lemon, jasmine, and black pepper. I thoroughly enjoyed this combination, and will probably need to pick up the rest of the Arance Mandarini trifecta.
$SELFCARE - Work is already roaring, but I’m working from home today, so I’m taking some time for myself before jumping into the business of the day. And honestly, spending twenty minutes drawing this morning felt like a small meditation. Little wins.
