- Comment on Bats the size of a small dog 1 week ago:
I would have classed bogongs as small or medium size, are they really that much larger than other countries moths? If so I’d hate to see their reactions to moths which are actually large, not sure of the species but I’ve seen a few about palm sized.

You know you come off sounding like a misogynist twat when you use the language of misogynist twats right?
Could be worse, could come off sounding like Lidia Thorpe by thinking everything is racism and/or sexism.

- Comment on Booroomba Rocks looking north east towards Canberra 1 month ago:
When they tried Roombas for the yearly vacuuming of these rocks they all fell off the edge and caused a lot of hard work retrieving them, after that they changed the name of the place and went back to vacuuming it with teams of people.
- Comment on Booroomba Rocks looking north east towards Canberra 1 month ago:
Yep, and you can see a bit of Civic to the right of it behind Mt Taylor.

- Comment on How does this weed affect you? 1 month ago:
Can’t say I’ve ever really thought about it, though looking at pictures it does look familiar. Not sure how one differentiates it from native tussock grasses though.
I have stronger feelings about things like blackberries, fireweed, lantana, and crofton weed as these are ones I’ve had to put work into removing before (and blackberry is a pain for encroaching on single track networks or blocking off path walking). Running bamboo too to an extent, but while painful to get rid of that’s one that I think can be a nice sort of plant when in an appropriate location.
- Comment on Dorinda Cox accuses Greens of racism in scathing resignation letter 1 month ago:
If you start believing that racism is the cause of all your woes you’ll see it everywhere, particularly if - for example - you’re still salty about losing a vote to be deputy leader.
It is amusingly ironic though because the Greens both appear the least likely party to actually be racist and the most likely party to enable such a mindset during her time with them.
- Comment on A winters day from one of Canberra's classic tourist viewpoints 1 month ago:
It’s from a relatively unusual combination - a 60s era Hasselblad 500c and 150mm lens paired with an older (well much younger than the rest of the system, but still old for digital era) Leaf Aptus digital back I recently picked up. Not something particularly practical for most uses (the body being all manual and the back only good for very low ISO ratings) but old cameras are a bit of an interest of mine.

- Comment on Bit of snow up in the ranges this weekend 1 month ago:
It’s a trig point, one of many around the country which were originally used for surveying purposes. They’re basically a vestigal structure now as things like GPS have made them redundant for modern use. This design is pretty common but you do find a few variations on the theme - basically all I’ve seen have the top circles on a post but the support structure varies.
If you check out prominent hills in your area there’s a good chance that you’ll find some trig points, they were very widespread and large numbers are still around albeit often in a state of disrepair or with vegetation blocking them from view
- Comment on Bit of snow up in the ranges this weekend 1 month ago:
I’m forever mixing up Ginini and Gingera personally
You’re not the only one - for years the wikipedia page for Mt Ginini had the top of Mt Gingera as the primary picture.
Mt Franklin is indeed a good destination for a snow hunt, it’s the usual winter locked gate and if it’s closed below that (like today) it’s usually because there’s ok snow further down the hills. The walk up to the trig point gives a bit more height and a view too. Pity the old chalet burnt down as that sounds like a place that would have been interesting to check out.
- Comment on Bit of snow up in the ranges this weekend 1 month ago:
D’oh, it is indeed Coree. Ginini was where I was hoping to get to in an ideal world but they don’t leave the gate open to there in winter.

Time to bring back the ‘Feel the Power of Canberra’ licence plate slogan!
It’s a real reminder to consider edge cases when designing systems though - if you’re using frequencies reserved for radar there should really have been a fallback option for when someone actually shows up and uses their radar…
- Comment on We are seeing some vote manipulation 1 month ago:
Admins can (I believe) see all votes, full stop
This is correct, with the caveat that the votes must have federated with the admin’s instance (so other instances need a user to be subscribed to the community in question, and votes can take time to flow through).
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 2 months ago:
There was actually this really cool news story that just came out about what people are actually using them for
There’s been this really cool news story recently about what people are using foraged mushrooms for, better ban doing that pronto because it’s clearly dangerous and there’s no chance anyone else is doing it safely…
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 2 months ago:
As far as I’m aware there isn’t a thriving jungle expedition scene in Victoria
You don’t know what people actually use machetes for, but they look scary so lets make a snide comment suggesting there’s no reason to have them. That’s exactly the sort of knee jerk reaction which makes for dumb laws like this.
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 2 months ago:
That will either stymie a lot of people who do legitimately need one or be useless. For example I have a machete and several legitimate uses for it - clearing a bunch of running bamboo on my (residential) block, clearing blackberry etc from single track for the dirt bike, and clearing lantana etc on my grandad’s property. If they require something like proof of owning rural land I would be blocked from legitimate use (if I lived in Vic), if they take me at my word what’s to stop any man and his dog claiming similar and then we’re back where we started but with more bureaucracy.
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 2 months ago:
Nothing like a good moral panic to make people throw reason out the window. Carrying a machete without a reasonable cause is already illegal and clearly didn’t stop these people, banning them altogether will just make things hard for those who would use them legally.
It’s the same level of thinking as some pelican near me who was calling for a 40km/h zone due to a recent accident. The existing laws against taking illegal drugs, stealing cars, staying on the road, and not speeding over the current limit didn’t stop the guy who caused it, but he sure would have listened to a 40km/h sign…
- Comment on Nationals leaving Coalition as David Littleproud announces split with Liberal party after election defeat 2 months ago:
I expect they’ll be back together in some form come next election, I can’t see the Libs - let alone the Nationals - forming government in their own right.
I am curious as to what will happen in Queensland state level now the federal parties have split - will they split the LNP party there?
- Comment on Nationals leaving Coalition as David Littleproud announces split with Liberal party after election defeat 2 months ago:
How do you actually come PM if you don’t have a party that can get a majority vote?
You convince a majority of the members of the House of Reps to agree to support you in passing bills required for operating the government (basically bills allowing them to spend money, also known as supply) and to support you if a motion of no confidence is put forward.
- Comment on Should Australia increase its defence spending? We asked 5 experts 4 months ago:
Something that was touched upon in the article but I think worthwhile enough to mention specifically is we should have a greater ability to manufacture essential materials ourselves - this would not be strictly defence spending but is definitely adjacent to it. Things like fuel are an obvious one here but there’s plenty of basics we don’t make on shore. As an example I’m thinking of the shortage of saline solution that got into the news a while back - that’s something very commonly used and literally just salt mixed with water, but we rely on importing it…

Sounds like Coles has been eyeing off Aldi and wants to also get into narrowing the range down to products they have more direct control over (bet their prices don’t follow Aldi though).

- Comment on Breaking: 'Incredible outcome' as missing hiker Hadi Nazari found alive after 13 days in dense bushland 6 months ago:
It’s more that after 2 weeks of concerted searching in the area you expect anyone still mobile or able to actively respond to have been found, and then it becomes more likely that they’ve fallen down between boulders or some other difficult location (in which case finding them within any reasonable time period is unlikely).
I do find it interesting that they found him near Blue Lake. I wonder what the plan was there - getting above the tree line is actually a decent idea if you want to be found in that country but from that description he seems a fair way away from where they would have been walking (maybe aiming for Charlottes Pass?). If they were near Geehi I would have thought it’d be easier to head downhill and aim to follow the river to the Alpine Way.
- Comment on Breaking: 'Incredible outcome' as missing hiker Hadi Nazari found alive after 13 days in dense bushland 6 months ago:
I really wasn’t expecting they’d find him alive given how long it had been - now that’s a nice thing to be wrong about.
