- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 1 week ago:
There was actually this really cool news story that just came out about what people are actually using them for
There’s been this really cool news story recently about what people are using foraged mushrooms for, better ban doing that pronto because it’s clearly dangerous and there’s no chance anyone else is doing it safely…
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 1 week ago:
As far as I’m aware there isn’t a thriving jungle expedition scene in Victoria
You don’t know what people actually use machetes for, but they look scary so lets make a snide comment suggesting there’s no reason to have them. That’s exactly the sort of knee jerk reaction which makes for dumb laws like this.
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 1 week ago:
That will either stymie a lot of people who do legitimately need one or be useless. For example I have a machete and several legitimate uses for it - clearing a bunch of running bamboo on my (residential) block, clearing blackberry etc from single track for the dirt bike, and clearing lantana etc on my grandad’s property. If they require something like proof of owning rural land I would be blocked from legitimate use (if I lived in Vic), if they take me at my word what’s to stop any man and his dog claiming similar and then we’re back where we started but with more bureaucracy.
- Comment on Machetes to be banned from sale in Victoria the wake of Northland Shopping Centre brawl 1 week ago:
Nothing like a good moral panic to make people throw reason out the window. Carrying a machete without a reasonable cause is already illegal and clearly didn’t stop these people, banning them altogether will just make things hard for those who would use them legally.
It’s the same level of thinking as some pelican near me who was calling for a 40km/h zone due to a recent accident. The existing laws against taking illegal drugs, stealing cars, staying on the road, and not speeding over the current limit didn’t stop the guy who caused it, but he sure would have listened to a 40km/h sign…
- Comment on Nationals leaving Coalition as David Littleproud announces split with Liberal party after election defeat 2 weeks ago:
I expect they’ll be back together in some form come next election, I can’t see the Libs - let alone the Nationals - forming government in their own right.
I am curious as to what will happen in Queensland state level now the federal parties have split - will they split the LNP party there?
- Comment on Nationals leaving Coalition as David Littleproud announces split with Liberal party after election defeat 2 weeks ago:
How do you actually come PM if you don’t have a party that can get a majority vote?
You convince a majority of the members of the House of Reps to agree to support you in passing bills required for operating the government (basically bills allowing them to spend money, also known as supply) and to support you if a motion of no confidence is put forward.
- Comment on Should Australia increase its defence spending? We asked 5 experts 2 months ago:
Something that was touched upon in the article but I think worthwhile enough to mention specifically is we should have a greater ability to manufacture essential materials ourselves - this would not be strictly defence spending but is definitely adjacent to it. Things like fuel are an obvious one here but there’s plenty of basics we don’t make on shore. As an example I’m thinking of the shortage of saline solution that got into the news a while back - that’s something very commonly used and literally just salt mixed with water, but we rely on importing it…

Not only at Christmas, but delicious soft cheeses are a more occasional food normally (as I work on avoiding both draining the bank account and having to buy larger pants).

Nice, my Christmas time Brie supply is secure again.
- Comment on Coles to dramatically reduce number of products to simplify shopper experience 3 months ago:
Sounds like Coles has been eyeing off Aldi and wants to also get into narrowing the range down to products they have more direct control over (bet their prices don’t follow Aldi though).

- Comment on Breaking: 'Incredible outcome' as missing hiker Hadi Nazari found alive after 13 days in dense bushland 4 months ago:
It’s more that after 2 weeks of concerted searching in the area you expect anyone still mobile or able to actively respond to have been found, and then it becomes more likely that they’ve fallen down between boulders or some other difficult location (in which case finding them within any reasonable time period is unlikely).
I do find it interesting that they found him near Blue Lake. I wonder what the plan was there - getting above the tree line is actually a decent idea if you want to be found in that country but from that description he seems a fair way away from where they would have been walking (maybe aiming for Charlottes Pass?). If they were near Geehi I would have thought it’d be easier to head downhill and aim to follow the river to the Alpine Way.

I really wasn’t expecting they’d find him alive given how long it had been - now that’s a nice thing to be wrong about.

- Comment on Raygun: The Musical cancelled after Olympian issues legal threat 5 months ago:
I just read the ABC version of this article, which has some zingers in it I think are worth quoting:
She said the lawyers told her she was “damaging” breakdancer Rachael Gunn’s brand, and joked, “She doesn’t need me to do that”.
“They also said I wasn’t allowed to do the dance, because she owns the kangaroo dance. That one did puzzle me. I mean, that’s an Olympic-level dance. How would I possibly be able to do that without any formal breakdancing training?”

- Comment on If Australians knew the whole truth about Indigenous history, Lidia Thorpe’s royal outburst would not have been a shock | Celeste Liddle 7 months ago:
The same argument that won the gay marriage plebiscite - people should be equal under the law and, by extension, our constitution.
- Comment on If Australians knew the whole truth about Indigenous history, Lidia Thorpe’s royal outburst would not have been a shock | Celeste Liddle 7 months ago:
Last year, Australia showed how unengaged and racist this country remains by refusing to insert an Indigenous advisory voice
Convenient that the author forgot to mention that the very person they’re writing about was a vocal No voter. You can say many things about Lydia Thorpe but politically unengaged is not one of them, and while she might be a little bit racist it’s definitely not against Indigenous people.
I’ll also note that the Tent Embassy had a giant banner hung up urging people to vote No, guess they’re all politically unengaged and racist…

- Comment on ABC NEWS unveils new-look website and app 9 months ago:
Not keen at all on how it increases picture sizes and makes certain articles more prominent at the expense of actual information.
Also, what pelican told them that video shorts should take up such a massive section of the page (and not at the bottom either)? One of my bugbears these days is how information that can be conveyed much faster as text keeps getting pushed as video so people can spend both more time and vastly more data to find it out.
- Comment on These are Victoria's most dangerous country roads, according to drivers 9 months ago:
It would’ve been completely unsafe to drive at 80
That’s why it’s called a speed limit, emphasis on limit. I believe limits should be set at a point such as you describe - a speed which reasonable people would consider clearly unsafe for a road. Drivers should then use their judgement of the corners/visibility, the current conditions, and their vehicle to choose a speed safe for their particular circumstances - this will obviously vary widely for different parts of the road, different conditions, and different vehicles. Setting speed limits to a point where you can safely drive the slowest sections of the road in poor conditions makes them effectively recommended speeds rather than limits, and I believe this trend has (and will continue to have) a negative effect on driver skill levels.

- Comment on Out finding snow in the ranges 10 months ago:
It was pretty busy up there, plenty of 4wds out and about heading to Mt Coree and up Mt Franklin road to either Bulls Head or where the road was closed at the Snow Gum gate. Luckily not at a traffic jam sort of level though - the dirt roads tend to dissuade a lot of people.
I can imagine Corin road would indeed have been a mess today, it can be bad enough on a regular weekend let alone a snow day where you have considerably more traffic and even more chance of people driving super slowly or trying to pull over for photos.

- Comment on Greens senator threatens Woolworths CEO with six months in prison for contempt of Senate 1 year ago:
I feel like inflation has rather diminished the impact of the monetary side of a contempt finding - $5k just doesn’t have the same impact as six months in prison anymore. It’s like how you see the occasional old sign in lifts warning that smoking can be punished by a (the presumably initially impactful) fine of up to $20…
- Comment on Bondi Junction attacker's interactions with Queensland Police 'forensically' examined amid debate over stop-and-search laws 1 year ago:
I was concerned these recent stabbings would start a push towards screwing over people like me who regularly carry pocket knives, and unsurprisingly it’s started. It’s rather disappointing how many people go straight to pearl clutching at the mention of a knife even though I and many others have had them on hand as useful tools for decades without feeling the need to stab anyone.
