- Comment on Why aren't there more mice with 360° scrolling? 16 hours ago:
I’m not sure if that is an universal thing or just a Linux / X11 kinda thing but I can scroll horizontally with my mouse wheel. Just hold shift and then scroll the wheel.
- Comment on How are locks and keys mass produced? 2 days ago:
There are actually “rules” about which pins may go into which positions. For example, you don’t want a very short pin (resulting in a “thick part” on the key’s blade) in the first position (closest to the bow, the part you are gripping on a key) and then only longer pins the further you move towards the tip. If you had such key, you could remove it from the lock while the plug is turned as only deeper cuts (for longer pins) are encountered by the first pin. And a deeper cut can take a shorter pin without issues. That’s why you don’t see keys with a “staircase pattern”.
Another limitation is MACS (maximum adjacent cut specification), which governs which cut depths may be adjacent. When you insert a key, the pins ride up and down the cuts on the key. If you were to put a super deep cut next to a super shallow cut, the “slope” gets too steep and the key is hard to insert or remove. This means if you know the depth of one cut and the MACS for this model of lock, you can rule out certain cut depths for its direct neighbors. For example, you know that the key you want to forge has a very deep cut, let’s say depth 8, on a particular position. Since we know the model of the lock (the professionals recognize a lock just by looking at the keyhole), we know that MACS is 5 and the deepest possible cut is a 9. The direct neighbors of our 8 can be either a 9 or anything from 7 to 3. They cannot be 1 or 2 since that would violate the MACS and repeating the same depth is also very unusual, so we can rule out 8.
Now add manufacturing tolerances into the equation and the potential key space is getting even smaller.

Spin it further and get rid of “great” and “outstanding”. I suggest using plus good and double plus good.

Adding a shameless plug here: Aegis is available on f-droid and allows you to backup your 2FA secrets on your own server (e.g. own nextcloud) in case you don’t trust the default Google authenticator.
- Comment on Why have so many services started using single-factor passwordless authentication in the last little while? 3 months ago:
Time based one time passwords. Those (usually) six digit codes which get replaced every 30 seconds or so. During setup you copied the secret to your device (usually smartphone) and now your device and the server you authenticate at can calculate the same secret code every thirty seconds.

It’s true, humans fighting humans just to reclaim borders from some point in the history. A country cheers on autocratic behavior of their leader. The planet itself is dying because humanity consumes more resources to than it can restore. The universe would do us a favor if the heat death happens sooner than prognosed.

So you should obtain prop money for that to avoid charges for defacing. But trying to pay with prop money is probably attempted fraud.

I see you’re coming from a .de domain so chances are you might have a Thalia (store) in your area. I’ve bought a Tolino Shine about 6 years back and I really like it. Sure, you can buy them online too, but I liked the option to try it out before I buy.

That’s why they are armed like they go to a war zone. Don’t need to be fast off you have weaponry which has more reach than even the fittest guy can run before they pull the trigger. Survival of the suspect is optional.

- Comment on Why do some say they own or have bought something that they technically haven't (e.g. domain names, expensive things, etc.)? 10 months ago:
For domains, you actually own them. If you define ownership as being able to trade them compared to leasing something where you are not allowed to sell the item for example.
- Comment on Hypothetically, if you are in prison and want to communicate with the outside world without being detected, what are some ways to hide a message within an innocuous letter? 10 months ago:
You usually get the book corresponding to your faith, so that would be an option. Given that the Bible (can’t speak mich about it but way less about the others) has chapters and verses and what not, addressing single words is simple.
For the “name of relative is the code”, yeah that needs a good memory.
- Comment on Hypothetically, if you are in prison and want to communicate with the outside world without being detected, what are some ways to hide a message within an innocuous letter? 10 months ago:
Your options depend on how much code you can agree on. Ask about imaginary relatives map each name to a meaning, so asking about the health of Aunt Judy could mean that the prison refuses your access to a lawyer and telling you thought about Uncle Sam could mean they keep you in solitary. Or whatever facts you want to communicate. Your revolutionary friends could respond in the same manner. The flaw is in being limited to previously agreed upon code words.
If you have access to a common book, you can refer to words by page, line and word number. You could embed the numbers as words in a story you are writing to your (imaginary) child. “Behind the seven hills, there were five houses with nine rooms each” can translate to “take the 9th word on page seven, line five”. Obviously you need the exact same copy of the book for this to work, the Bible is quite common for this cipher.
