being a lemmy instance maintainer is hard work and learning lol.

The site is up and running but I’ll sort of live comment on my work: Anubis has some tuning that I’m trying to work on to let good things in and ignore the bad. That’s what bit us in the butt a few weeks ago. I had it too high strung and it ignored large instances like lemmy.world pinging us 100s of times per minute.

- Comment on lemmy.radio (un)scheduled downtime 5 months ago:
I’ve been thinking about this comment a lot lately, and I think I’m going to open my mind to contributions.
More to come, but I think I’ve had it squared in my mind to take the brunt of the payments/hosting. But I think that if people want to help in this manner, it’d be rude of me to stop them and may make people think I’m “cutting them out” of what lemmy.radio is.
I want this to be a public instance (for hams) and I’d love for people to contribute in any way they want.
Definitely open to suggestions. I was looking at opencollective.com to help facilitate.

Thanks for putting up with the (un)scheduled downtime!
A status update: for the past 2 years, we have operated using a fairly large size VPS using Akamai/Linode. To be specific, we were using:
- 16GB ram
- 8 CPUs
- 320GB drive
This was mostly due to the the large amounts of images, videos, media that we accumulate over the years we’ve been up and running (we’re going to be turning 3 years old very soon btw!)
A few months ago, to help with the large costs of running this site, I moved all of our media to object storage, which TREMENDOUSLY cut down our drive space usage. And…
Today is the day, I actually scaled us back to a “smaller” VPS to help cut down on prices further. We are currently using:
- 8GB ram
- 4 CPUs
- 160GB drive
So let’s talk turkey about savings (if you care)
This drops our server fees from about ~$175/month to around ~$90/month
This is the price of the VPS, object storage, .radio domain, and email services we use.
Thank you for putting up with the hour or so we were down. I’m hoping that this will keep us running WELL into the future.
Cheers and 72,
w0odl

- Comment on How will this community survive its Eternal September? 2 years ago:
We’re using linode services on this instance and we backup nightly, but not everything. I’d only want to implement a higher level of backups if we needed it because costs go up.
I’d never really think/imply this is a business. I make no money from this. Just more in the thought of people working together to make this a better place.

Awesome post! Since you made the original post, I’ve actually already started a github wiki to address my concerns about what it would look like going forward. To address them in line:
- I’ll always want this to be a selective community. But as you said, this may be more than what “I” want and that may need to change in the future.
- People do make mistakes. I can tell you I have already as a moderator and that’s just how things are.
- For adding an admin, I have started a github organization that I would want someone to join who had experience in how things work and how to mitigate errors. I can tell you… I’ve brought down the site for an hour or 2 a few times and I hope no one noticed… And with the thought of money, I’m comfortable with where we are now with how much we cost, but going forward, there’s a lot I’d like to add like better backups that I know would add cost to our instance.
- I think this would always be the case. What we’re almost talking about is treating this like a business where we just put the trust of this instance in people. That’s where the aforementioned backups would help (hopefully)
- You already have me thinking too much about not letting this fail! I think that what we are discussing isn’t an overnight thing, but maybe over the coming year(s) we could implement.
- There are already a lot of pull requests and issues on the lemmy github about GDPR, and it seems as though it’s something that is sorta addressed already but is a big deal that will be fully addressed in the future

I’ve had that thought and we’ve talked about it a bit with respect to upgrades, but honestly, it opens a larger can of worms and trust levels.
There’s a lot of sensitive information that I’m already by default trusted with and finding someone that, to be honest, I can trust would be a big conversation.
Also… deploying this ship is not the easiest thing in the world, even as a docker container. Documentation is like the wild west and sometimes, you have to take a best guess or know how docker deploys work or how the instance itself works.
BUT you are correct. if this is going to be a long lasted instance, having other people on board would help.
