- Comment on Do all American stores have greeters? 2 weeks ago:
At Costco, they’re less “greeters” and more “people who check your membership card”. Actually, since Costco switched to automatic card scanners, they’re “people who watch to make sure you scan your card and the machine makes the happy beep”.
That said, at least at my local Costco, they also smile and welcome you into the store – it’s just not their primary function.

But (-i)^2=-1 as well. So we still need a convention to distinguish i from -i.

My biggest beef with playing it on SteamDeck was related to network connectivity.
I was playing at home and went a long way from base. Then I had to take my daughter to a class and threw the Deck in my backpack to play while I waited for her to finish.
The game opened, said it had lost the connection to the server and killed me. I respawned back at base, thought about how far I’d need to walk to recover my body and noped right out of there to play Vampire Survivors instead. I never returned.
That was a couple of years ago while the game was still in early access. If it’s now possible to play offline, I might give it another go. (It’s a nice game.)

I find this funny, since I did a Gimp tutorial back in 2000 (early Gimp 2.x maybe, but maybe still 1.x – I don’t remember that part). I got okay with it.
A friend asked me to do some early photo editing a couple of years later since they’d heard that I was “good at Photoshop”. I pointed out that I was actually “mediocre at Gimp”. I was plunked down at a computer with a (probably pirated) install of Photoshop and asked to touch up some photos.
I hated it. Nothing was where I expected it to be coming from Gimp.
It sounds like I might hate Gimp 3.
- Comment on Did anyone here ever actually play the Mousetrap board game or use the cards in Operation? 8 months ago:
I babysat a brother and sister in the early 90s and we played Mousetrap properly after dinner to kill time until bedtime. Worst babysitter ever.
Then I let them stay up past bedtime while we figured out the most cursed modifications/add-ons. Best babysitter ever.
(In truth, I remember that I had talked with the parents beforehand about “stated bedtime” versus “real bedtime”.)

This was my first thought, too.
I started taking antidepressants a few months to treat ADHD-related anxiety and depression. (The doctor suggested that I could try ADHD-specific meds, but pointed out that I’m already a relatively successful adult, so clearly I’ve built coping mechanisms over the years.)
I’m surprised by how much more rational I’ve become when dealing with stuff.
I first really noticed it when I was crossing at an intersection and a driver turning right didn’t see me and almost hit me. She slammed on the brakes and waved her hands in a clearly startled and apologetic way. Before the meds I probably would have flipped her the bird and had my heart pounding in my ears for the next half hour as I seethed with anger. Now, my thought was “She made a mistake. I’m fine. She knows she made a mistake and she’ll certainly be more careful next time. It’s okay.”
That’s not to say that I don’t get angry anymore. I just get angry about stuff that matters or where I can change something. It feels a lot healthier.
Standard disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. This is not medical advice. It’s just my anecdotal experience. Maybe talk to your doctor about getting tested for depression and/or anxiety. (I had never thought to before this year, because in my youth I was just called “disorganized”, “lazy”, and “scatterbrained”.)

The quick adjustments to tileable blueprints sound amazing. Such a great idea!
Somehow I thought the pipette on water to get an offshore pump (like how you can pipette on an ore field for a miner) was already a thing. That and the quick access to landfill will save so much time when designing nuclear plants.
The spidertron stuff sounds nice too, but they’re usually so late game that I haven’t minded the slightly clunky v1.1 status quo.
