Nope. It resulted in the original Netflix, aka a service that actually worked and had everything we wanted for a time. Direct reaction to mass piracy and actually reduced it by 90℅ iirc.
You also can’t crack down on non centralized services and the more decentralized nodes, the harder the job becomes and the more expensive. At some point it will become uneconomic to go after pirates.
And, yes there will be massively less movies & shows which is very good. We live in a fresh hell where billionaires push out half baked shit every week and the only way to tell them is to not buy it.
- Comment on meirl 3 days ago:
Anyone who still forks money to billionaires for entertainment might be stupid.
- Comment on Federal workers vs Elon Musk: I’ve never seen a billionaire carry the mail, put out a forest fire, make sure people get their Social Security checks, answer a phone call from a suicidal veteran 5 days ago:
We can take these fuckers down. Just start organizing purchases around them, together.
Let’s build federated platforms in competition to their corpo bullshit. Think federated payment. The Muslim community has been doing this for ages. It called hawala. Amazon is just a glorified shopping site. Its not even good anymore.
Can anyone link any projects that might go in this direction?
- Comment on Valve ban advertising-based business models on Steam, no forced adverts like in mobile games 1 week ago:
That would be a great solution. Another would be to put quotas of employees, customers, owners and the community (people living around a plant for example) in there. Just an idea though.
- Comment on Valve ban advertising-based business models on Steam, no forced adverts like in mobile games 1 week ago:
Two things can be true at once:
- valve so far took tremendous care of the people using their product. They have outclassed afaik every other billion dollar company in the world in terms of listening to their customers and not exploiting them to hell (as others do).
- billionaire companies are cancer. If gabe ever gives up valve (through death or whatever), we are at the mercy of a monopolist that can extract as much as they want.
My conclusion: force companies to behave like valve does now, but forever. Let them make money without exploiting people. And in case if valve: break any monopoly.
Down with shareholder value.
- Comment on Game Pass sets quarterly revenue record, sees 30% growth in PC subscribers 2 weeks ago:
I would agree if there wasnt a giant hole in your reasoning.
Once you stopped paying, „your“ library evaporated. It isnt that you rent out individual games. You have whole libraries built just from that.
And please dont go into the „gamers responsibility“. Thats an ableist view. Lots of gamers are underage and/or unable to make basic decisions especially against dark patterns and social pressure. Education and laws to limit exposure to this toxic stuff needs to happen, period.
- Comment on Game Pass sets quarterly revenue record, sees 30% growth in PC subscribers 3 weeks ago:
I know this is going to backfire: gamepass is convenient but every person subscribing fuels the toxic „rentseeking culture“ of capitalists worldwide. Some would say that its much better to pirate than to use this shit. Besides: it is technologically subpar and surely privacy invasive.

Exactly my thought. Thank you for pointing that out.

That would be neat as well. :) thanks for sharing.
- Comment on Would "suggest price" be a positive option for steam? 1 month ago:
There actually already is steamdb which does that exact thing. The reason I suggested it is because probably all would benefit from it.

I‘m kind of tipping over into cybersec through my job as an admin for hire and it system engineer. I‘m self taught in app development, systems administration and currently working on bringing new linux OSs to former proprietary devices. I did a couple of tiers on hackthebox and will be attending 38c3 as my first congress.
I wonder how to proceed as a self employed „mercenary“ who wants to work for small businesses. I do think doing security stuff like pen tests would be good. Any ideas? :)

Thanks for pointing that out. Its like we have multiple levels of control mechanisms ensuring our eternal enslavement.
- Comment on Amazon cloud boss says employees unhappy with 5-day office mandate can leave 3 months ago:
i can see your point. i for example did buy from amazon once so far this year. it was because the product I needed was expensive and part of a business calculation where i dont have the luxury to waste money.
however, I bought more than a hundred smaller products off of local sellers which are more expensive but i was able to afford it.
thats all I’m asking. that folks make a concious effort to prefer local sellers if they can, not some one dimensional exclusivity that will not work anyway.

My stance is that most people have poor reading comprehension. Thanks for making my point.
I said „without necessity“. Having no other comparable options qualifies as necessity in my book.
Activism is great but the moment people shun others for not ruining themselves for the cause they become radicals.
So no, thats not my stance.
And no, I havent been born privileged in the typical western way. But I have the privilege of being pretty smart which enabled me to escape the prison of an uneducated, violent household.
And yes, I hold people accountable for not giving a shit about others. Deal with it.

And more condescension. Its as if more of the same thing will do different things.
Maybe add some racism or climate denial to the mix. Just for some seasoning.
- Comment on Amazon cloud boss says employees unhappy with 5-day office mandate can leave 4 months ago:
You have exactly the attitude of someone able to work for a monster like amazon. Unnecessary aggressive and condescending.
Thanks for making my point.

I think people working at amazon and shopping at amazon, both without clear necessity, are part of the problem.

I’m monitoring the cpu and ram and so far the server isnt utilizing it except short bursts which dont max out anything. i’ll try and optimize the network first and then go for performance. i suppose its a multi stage issue by now. will update on the matter.

Hmmm… that makes sense. I‘ll check. Thank you for the suggestion.
- Comment on Experiencing weird rubberbanding and disconnects on lan connection. [Satisfactory] 4 months ago:
What happens is that I get rubberbanding (I go somewhere, build something, get set back like 30 seconds and my stuff is not built), loosing my connection like once every two hours or something. My wife plays with me and has similar issues.
The logs sometimes show „tick took longer than anticipated“ or something, which would indicate a performance issue but since the cpu and the ram arent even used properly, I assume it might be limited somehow.

All people should strike as long as the wages are still not bound to inflation. How the hell should anyone except CEOs feel treated fairly? Housing is unaffordable, companies grow to nation state size and bolster record profits while most wages were outrun by inflation for the last 50 years.
- Comment on After 350,000 signatures in an EU consumer rights campaign, Ubisoft is adding offline modes to The Crew games - but not the now-dead original 5 months ago:
Pure principle is the answer. People who buy a game should be able to play the game as long as they wish, sell it, give it their grandkids for all I care.
The problem with your argument is „doesnt affect me, wont bother“.
Think of anything you like or even love. Now think of it being taken away, because someone else doesnt care about it. You think thats fair?
