Eric Bieniemy was a player on the 1999 Eagles as a running back. If hired, he would be the 11th member of the Eagles staff or roster that year to become an NFL head coach (I’m counting Reid himself as part of the 11, so only the 10th if you don’t count Reid himself.)
Here are the current 10
- Head Coach Andy Reid (Philadelphia Eagles 1999-2012, Kansas City Chiefs 2013-Present)
- Assistant to the Head Coach Sean McDermott (Buffalo Bills 2017-Present)
- Quarterbacks Coach Brad Childress (Minnesota Vikings 2006-2010)
- Wide Receivers Coach David Culley (Houston Texans 2021)
- Tight Ends/Offensive Line Coach Pat Shurmur (Cleveland Browns 2011-2012, New York Giants 2018-2019)
- Linebackers Coach Ron Rivera (Carolina Panthers 2011-2019, Washington Football Team/Commanders 2020-2023)
- Defensive Backs Coach Leslie Frazier (Minnesota Vikings 2011-2013)
- Defensive Assistant Steve Spagnuolo (St Louis Rams 2009-2011)
- Special Teams Coach John Harbaugh (Baltimore Ravens 2008-Present)
- Starting/Backup Quarterback Doug Pederson (Philadelphia Eagles 2016-2020, Jacksonville Jaguars 2022-Present)
So Bieniemy would be the 11th (10th not counting Reid himself). I haven’t checked the staff of every team in NFL history to confirm, but I think that’s an NFL record.
The only one I can think of that comes close is the 2013 Redskins. That team featured:
- Head Coach Mike Shanahan (Las Vegas Raiders 1988-1989, Denver Broncos 1995-2008, Washington Redskins 2010-2013)
- Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco 49ers 2017-Present)
- Wide Receivers Coach Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins 2022-Present)
- Quarterbacks Coach Matt LaFleur (Green Bay Packers 2019-Present)
- Defensive Backs Coach Raheem Morris (Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2009-2011, Atlanta Falcons 2024-Present)
Defensive Assistant Bobby Slowik will likely be the sixth sooner rather than later, while Offensive Assistant Aubrey Pleasant also seems like an up and comer. Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett was a former head coach so you could also count him as the sixth if you wanted. The reason I counted Morris and not him is because Morris got another future head coaching job after serving on the 2013 Redskins, while Haslett didn’t.
The 1999 Eagles have to hold the NFL record, yeah? Are there any other coaching staffs that rival them?
