There have been 50 head coaches hired in the last 8 years (and part of this yr), and an average of about 6 per year. Of those hires, about two-thirds have come from an offensive background, about one-third from a defensive background, and about 2% of them are Joe Judge. The vast majority that come from an offensive or defensive background come from OC or DC coordinator positions. A small handful were never coordinators prior to the HC position, examples are Dan Campbell and Brian Flores.
This year, we have already seen two come from the defensive side of the ball (Mayo, Pierce), and we have Callahan from an OC position. In my data set going back to 2017, there is no discernable change in the trend—just a steady 2/3rds and 1/3rd ratio.
