Hail to the off-season. I am relishing in this national championship as one should. I really think the defense did an incredible job, completely taking Penix and the rest of this vaulted offense off their game. While I thought the defense would keep Washington in check, I did not expect such a full shut down effort. So I decided to take a look at the performance of QBs throughout the season against this Michigan defensive unit and I think the results will surprise you! Bolded is the QB with the highest QBR.
I know QBR isn’t a perfect measure, but still interesting. If multiple QBs were in the game, I listed the one with the most passing attempts.
EDIT: for those wondering, Defense allowed 8 total Passing TDs, responsible for 18 total INTs. (The table doesn’t add up to that because I only included the passer with the most attempts).
| Player | QBR | C/ATT | YDS | TD/INT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECU Mason Garcia | 30.0 | 11/18 | 80 | 0/1 |
| UNLV Doug Brumfield | 33.2 | 10/19 | 100 | 0/0 |
| BGSU Camden Orth | 65.2 | 8/11 | 91 | 0/0 |
| Rutgers Gavin Wimsatt | 84.5 | 11/21 | 180 | 1/1 |
| Nebraska Heinrich Haarberg | 48.2 | 14/25 | 199 | 0/1 |
| Minnesota Athan Kaliakmanis | 7.4 | 5/15 | 52 | 1/2 |
| Indiana Brendan Sorsby | 68.5 | 6/15 | 44 | 0/0 |
| Michigan State Katin Houser | 39.1 | 12/22 | 101 | 0/1 |
| Purdue Hudson Card | 34.5 | 12/28 | 144 | 1/1 |
| Penn State Drew Allar | 63.6 | 10/22 | 70 | 1/0 |
| Maryland Taulia Tagovailoa | 57.5 | 21/31 | 247 | 0/2 |
| Ohio State Kyle McCord | 89.7 | 18/30 | 271 | 2/2 |
| Iowa Deacon Hill | 27.8 | 18/32 | 120 | 0/0 |
| Alabama Jalen Milroe | 48.0 | 16/23 | 116 | 0/0 |
| Washington Michael Penix Jr. | 63.0 | 27/51 | 255 | 1/2 |
Kyle McCord was responsible for TWO of the only EIGHT passing TDs given up by this defense in FIFTEEN games. I think many Ohio State fans viewed Kyle McCord as the reason they lost that game, but perhaps in retrospect, Kyle McCord was the only reason Ohio State was even competitive in that game. Very curious to see if their QB swap will end up being an upgrade or downgrade. Also, special shout-out to Rutgers QB Gavin Wimsatt for being the only other QB to manage a QBR above 70.
