#1 Michigan is now in possession of the College Football Belt with their 34–13 victory over Belt holder #2 Washington in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The Wolverines are now 26–26–1 in Belt games, and the Huskies are now 47–24.
This is the Wolverines’ 9th reign as Belt champions. This is their first reign since they held the Belt from October 25, 2003 to January 1, 2004. They lost the Belt to #3 USC in a 28–14 loss in the 2004 Rose Bowl.
Michigan now moves into a tie for the 6th-most Belt reigns alongside LSU, Ohio State, and Princeton.
Michigan’s next defense of the Belt will be a home game on August 31 against Fresno State. This will be the Bulldogs’ second Belt game and their first since November 19, 2005, a 50–42 loss to Belt-holder #1 USC
