ML wanted a 64 team playoff and took a lot of shit for that. Being a traditionalist I was one of those people that wanted to cling to the Bowl system.
After this Bowl season with the opt-outs it’s pretty clear the Bowl System has outlived it’s usefulness. It’s a sad truth but here we are with a major evolution to the game.
We’ve gone from 2 to 4 teams and next year to 12. What’s next? Coach Leach may have been right all along and it’s just take time for the rest of CFB to catch up with the Pirate.
I’m not a fan of a 64 team playoff but I do think 24 teams like the FCS might work. I think it would greatly reduce opt-outs and hopefully mitigate some of the transfers.
I would have a “NIT-Type” playoff for the next 24 out and after that if they want to have some insignificant Bowl for teams that will never have a chance at a playoff with players that are happy to compete then go for it.
