Yesterday, we trialled a new (potentially regular) thread in r/soccer - similar to the popular “you are the ref” discussions on other football forums and outlets.

The idea is to each week we will choose one somewhat contested officiating decision and conduct a poll using the in-built Reddit function to gauge the r/soccer consensus, and inspire further discussion.

The first Video Assistant /r/soccer was on the penalty awarded for Aston Villa in the 87th minute of their game vs Burnley, for Aaron Ramsey’s tackle on Jhon Duran.

The people have spoken.

There were over 3,000 votes, with around 45% thinking no action should have been taken (meaning no penalty), 35% agreeing with the officiating decision to award a penalty, and 10% believing Duran shoiuld instead have been booked for diving.

We felt the thread was a success, and as such will be looking to carry it on in future weeks.

To answer some feedback - the Reddit Poll feature has no option to “view results without voting”, meaning you will need to vote in the poll to see the results (or wait until they are posted the next day).
