This is not a meltdown. This is regressing to the mean in a non-Mahomes way. This team has only won 3 games by more than 1 possession.
Let’s just look at the defense in the 4th quarter.
Teams Eagles choked against:
Commanders x 1 with Howell. Commanders actually scored and tied it to send to OT. The offense should have run it out instead of scoring, but the D allowed Sam Howell to drive the length of the field to tie.
Jets with Zach Wilson as QB. Drove the length of the field multiple times in a comeback bid to take the 4th quarter lead and hold on to it.
Seahawks with Drew Lock at QB. Lock had the ball with under 2 mins left and drove 75 yards to win.
Cardinals today. Kyler Murray had the ball with just over 2 mins and drove 70 yards to win.
Teams Eagles barely survived against:
Giants, where they benched their 3rd string QB at half, and still ended up driving with the chance to win it, and the last play reached the endzone but fell incomplete.
Patriots, with Mac Jones at QB. Had a 1 possession lead and let the Patriots drive the length of the field and had to hold on in the last play which reached the endzone but fell incomplete.
Commanders x1, again with Howell driving late.
Cowboys x 1, and actually let them get to the 1 yard line as time expired. Also lucked out with Dak stepping out on the 2pt, and the one lucky stop at the goal line of the TE purely due to how he held the ball.
Chiefs, and that was only due to a drop of a go-ahead TD with under a minute left.
Bills, the Bills took the lead with a minute left, and Eagles had to drive to survive. Then in OT the Bills had a go-ahead TD but Allen and his WR had a miscommunication.
Vikings by 6, and they were up 27-7 in the 3rd, and let it get to 34-28 before lucking out and getting the ball to run out the clock.
Beat the Rams by 9 when Kupp was barely back in action.
Beat the Dolphins by 14 with 10 penalties against Miami to 0 against us.
Beat Tampa Bay by 14. Full disclosure I don’t even remember this game.
Other:
Got shellacked by Dallas the 2nd time. Allowed 4 or 5 straight scoring drives.
Got shellacked by San Francisco and allowed 4 or 5 straight scoring drives.
Summary:
Biggest margin of victory: 14 points (vs Miami, vs Tampa Bay)
Number of 1 possession wins: 8 (Giants x 1, Commanders x 2, Cowboys x 1, Patriots x 1, Vikings x 1, Chiefs x 1, Bills x 1 – OT)
Number of 1 possession losses: 3 (Jets, Cardinals, Seahawks)
Biggest loss margin: 23 points (SF) and 20 points (DAL)
This team could easily be a sub-5 win team if balls bounce differently, if opponents don’t make glaring mistakes,
