A common refrain from the smooth brains about out of control government spending is that government spending has in general stayed approximately around 40% of GDP and thus government spending is not increasing. For one, that's fucking insane. But more importantly, it's a stupid argument. What justification is there for government spending to follow GDP?
Government spending, given technological improvements, should be decreasing when controlled for population growth. Any company worth its weight does exactly that all the time: reduce expenses on a per revenue basis, not sit back and go "Well, expenses didn't go up much. Go us!".
Government agencies like the post office demonstrate this most clearly. No incentive to modernize. Their newest trucks coming out, after approximately 3000 years, despite being perfect candidates for cheaper electric vehicles given their stop-and-go nature, are mainly the usual gas guzzlers. God only knows how many examples of such lack of desire to reduce costs exist...
