For ten years now I’ve been posting write-ups to /r/CFB after watching an upcoming Oregon opponent’s full season, and I’ve been delighted with the responses to my questions that I get from fans of each team. Five years ago I started writing for SB Nation’s Oregon site, Addicted to Quack, but I’ve continued to post them here along with my questions for fans. Here’s my review of Liberty:
- Any trends I’ve missed, or players I’m being unfair to?
- Every time I thought I had Salter in the passing game pinned down, he surprised me - you certainly can’t dismiss him as just a runner, but his throwing motion is too unorthodox and it comes out too hot on too many different kinds of throws at the same time. I’m really baffled about he can suddenly throw a well placed arc once they cross the 50 but the deep ball eludes him on their own side of the field. Any insights?
- Do you think Bedford will go back to the slot now that Blue is available again? I thought that they were missing a true, shifty slot receiver and thought Sibley was sort of in no man’s land, too big for that role but not tall enough to take Frith’s job away. And what’s up with Frith, anyway?
- I was surprised how late the RPO game came on, there are a lot of opportunities to take advantage of defenses selling out against wide zone and the veer to hit the tight end leaking out, but Hanshaw and Henderson are really only hit sparingly and as endzone targets. Is there some limitation there I’m unaware of?
- The disparity in run- and pass-blocking effectiveness from the line was a big surprise to me, usually lines have a much easier time in pass-pro. What do you think that’s about, or am I missing something?
- Do you think we’ll see any of the freshmen at defensive tackle or end during the bowl game? I thought that I was seeing some fatigue issues in the few games that went long due to not really having a full rotation.
- My guess was that Carter replaced Jolly as the starting backer at depth because he was just better at the job, do you think that’s right? I see a lot of other names on the roster for the position but hardly saw anyone besides the main three at all, just a couple of reps during the championship when Jolly was out, is there something going on there?
- What’s the deal with the dime package? I ran it through the regression engine and couldn’t find any strong correlations for why they’d go to it on standard downs, and it’s not like it helps their success rates.
- I figure that Green takes over for Hodge at nickel and Jones becomes the flex guy if Jimmerson is out, so that they’ve got six playable guys for the secondary, but beyond that it’s real dicey - a couple backup corners who they don’t seem to trust and maybe a true freshman safety we’ve never seen. Is that the situation or have I left somebody out?
- The interception figure is absolutely astonishing, but everybody in the adv stats community I share it with waves it off as unsustainable: “turnovers can’t be coached, it’s just luck.” What do you think?
