Let me preface this by saying I live in the Philadelphia suburbs. This may not apply to other parts of the country...

The story on the news is about employers in the Philadelphia Tri-state area having a very hard time finding people to fill job openings. And the #1 reason is the latest stimulus package. They extended unemployment and there NO requirement on the latest package that people who collect unemployment need to be actively looking for work. So, two things are happening:

  1. People just aren't bothering to look for work because they're being given free money.
  2. The people that are applying for job are applying for minimum wage jobs and demanding that they receive an hourly wage equal to their unemployment benefits, which is much higher than the minimum wage job they're applying for.

According to the news story, this has become such an enormous problem that the State will start requiring people to prove they're applying for jobs, like they did before the pandemic.

Holy unintended consequences, Batman.
