Most states have a flagship university that is usually called University of (state name). This school is usually the first public university that the state established and is often the largest and for the purposes of my post is usually where the highest level of football is played among public schools in the state. Many states also have another public school that will not the flagship, is often the second largest school in that state. These schools are usually named (State Name) State University.
I have noticed that not all state universities are equal when it comes to football. So I thought I would check out all 50 states to see what level the football programs of X State Universities are at.

Now, if you paid attention on school you probably realized that 15 states are not listed. These states do not have a state university that follows this naming convention. There is no Wyoming State University. Nor a Nebraska State University.
There is a however a California State University, so why didn’t I list it? Because California is weird. There isn’t one single California State University. There are 23 of them. Four of them don’t call themselves that. For example, California State University, San Diego is more commonly known as San Diego State University. This is the same for Fresno State, Sacramento State, and Fresno State. Officially they are all California State, but no one calls them that. As for where they fit in football, San Diego, Fresno and San Jose are all FBS, G5. Sacramento is FCS. Then you have three schools that have added an extra word to the name. California State Polytechnic San Luis Obispo, Humboldt, and Pomona. San Luis Obispo is FCS, the other two are Div II. The remaining schools the follow the naming convention of California State University, but four don’t play football and the rest all are Div II.
And then we get to the really weird one. New York. There is no New York State University. Nor is there a University of New York. Instead, they call themselves State University of New York. And every public university in the state is part of this system. For football, there is one FBS, G5 school. SUNY - Buffalo, but just like some of the California schools, no one calls it by it’s official name instead calling it University of Buffalo. The other two big campuses are SUNY-Stony Brook and SUNY-Albany, both of which are FCS. All remaining SUNY schools that play football are either Div II or III.
You may be wondering why I put this together. It’s because I am vacation from work this week and I have no money to travel.
