Giants QBs are getting sacked on 15.6% of drop-back. This is the 3rd highest sack rate since the merger, behind only the 1986 Eagles and the 1976 Lions. The Giants rate is 2.2X the NFL average of 7.2%.
All three Giants QBs are well above (worse than) the league average (100 att):
- Tommy DeVito 17.9% (Ranked 43rd out of 43 QBs with 100 attempts)
- Daniel Jones 15.5% (42nd out of 43)
- Tyrod Taylor 9.9% (<100 att, but would be ranked 36th out of 43)
That 1986 Eagles team had a rate of 16.8%, caused mostly by an individual all-time worst rate of 26.6% from Randall Cunningham that year. He got sacked once every FOUR times he dropped back (209 att).
The 1976 Lions team had a rate of 15.8%. Although that’s worse than the 15.6% from the Giants, the average sack rate was over 9% back then, and it’s 7.2% today. So relative to league average, the 2023 Giants come out looking worse.
I also added the 1988 Dolphins to the chart with their 1.1% rate–the best since the merger. Dan Marino was sacked only 6 times in 16 starts and 612 drop-backs (0.98%).
Last year’s Bears came in at 10th worst since the merger (13.3%) with Justin Fields at 14.8%.
A bonus shout-out to Steve Bono who has the most drop-backs in a season with no sacks. In 1994 with KC, he had 117 drop-backs and wasn’t sacked.
