A good (non piracy) case for using VPN - users IP addresses were leaked. Although why the heck they were logging them for a subtitles website is maybe a good question for the owners.

Hackers have no specific target, everything what has lots of traffic and reputation will be tested. Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks among other techniques are easy to execute to obtain lots of potential data. Selling those data is business, they do not really care what website the target is.
