With Joe Flacco walking in off the street and outperforming the Browns $230M QB, it’s starting to look like the Browns $230M contract, treasure trove of draft capital, and alienating a large portion of their fanbase, for Deshaun Watson wasn’t a good idea. To investigate further, I’ve done an extensive analysis on Browns QBs since 2020 using three key metrics:

  1. ANY/A
  2. Contract / earnings
  3. Number of alleged sexual assaults

The data confirms my priors, that the Deshaun Watson signing has been an unmitigated disaster by the Browns front office. When he plays, which is hardly ever (35% of his team’s games in his first two seasons), Watson has performed 17% below league average ANY/A of 6.06 and 42% below the average NFL leader from 2020-23 (8.65).

Seven other QBs have thrown the ball for Cleveland since 2020, five of them have a better ANY/A than Watson. Those five have an average of $3.22M in earnings per year, 93% lower than Watsons $46.0M AAV. Those five also average 0.00 alleged sexual assaults compared to 24.00 for Deshaun Watson.

I hope you found this post to be insightful, whether it confirms your thoughts, or provides you with an opposing view to consider. I think we can all agree that data is more valuable than anecdotes. What say you?
