Jayden Daniels just became the 2nd LSU QB to win the heisman. In just 5 years. But I feel there’s a more interesting and overlooked story hidden in the years between Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels.
Myles Brennan out of high school broke basically every passing record there is for mississippi high school football. He came in and sat behind Danny Etling for a year. Then, some random from OSU transferred in. Ok cool, QB battle with two former 4 stars, pretty evenly matched I’d say. Wrong. His replacement started for 2 years and went on to be the greatest QB in LSU history and had undoubtedly the best single season weve ever seen. But we all know that season. Brennan showed some flashes in his relief role at the end of some games, not that many were paying attention due to the absolute show that took place for 3 quarters prior.
4th year. Senior season (redshirt). Just won a national championship and bring back 2 of the best receivers to put on the purple and gold. Oh nevermind Jamaar Chase opted out. He wont pan out anyway. Not a team player. Over the next 3 games Myles would drop 1100 yards and 11 TDs against only SEC teams. He would also lose 2 of those games due to giving up 55 to Mizzou and 600 passing yards to MS State. He played through a devastating rib injury during the Mizzou game, but fans still blamed him for the loss(not joking). That injury turned out to be season ending. His role would be taken over by TJ Finley and Max Johnson, soon to be Texas football legends.
5th year. Improved defense, still some weapons offensively. Oh nevermind, season ending broken arm in a freak fishing accident (not joking again).
6th year. This is the year, job is his, stacked roster, new coach, oh shit he brought in a transfer, time to hit the portal. Flirted with Nebraska for a while (surely they won’t need a QB soon). Ultimately decides to come back to Death Valley in an act of courage to fight for his spot with some kid from Arizona State who’s to small for SEC ball anyway. He lost the battle. He then retired prior to the 2022 season starting. His competition once again, went on to win the heisman in his 2nd year starting and have a historically amazing season. The 2nd best in LSU history. He was sandwiched between 2 of the most electric and amazing QBs to ever touch CFB.
Myles Brennan was the unluckiest victim of the modern transfer portal and his story has for sure influenced the decisions of todays athletes (see Ty Thompson). He waited it out. He did everything right. He even came back from the portal to a new coach and to competition. Regardless how you feel about the state of CFB today and the portal, you have to feel for Myles Brennan.
