For Week 0, the Navy team began its first game of the post-Niumatalolo era - and of the entire year - by making the 7-hour flight from Maryland to Ireland, in order to play against a hungry Notre Dame team showcasing an entire sport to a intrigued Dublin audience. Needless to say, the 1-2 combo of Marcus Freeman and Sam Hartman made quick work of the cadets, who went down 28-0 at the half - and by the end, was only able to convert a late garbage time field goal in a 42-3 routing on a warm Emerald Isle summer night (which is, for us, a pretty dang hot summer afternoon).
Now, over three months later in Week 14, the Midshipmen will be at the opposite end of the schedule, this time concluding regular season play for the season by facing off against their well-familiar rivals from West Point, trading curious Celtic people for excited Celtics fans as the two teams carry on their 124th game in New England. And while this may not be the last game of the season ever (for a team would need to play Week 0 and make the Playoffs and win their semifinal to make the national championship game), what Navy has gone through today still makes for an interesting scheduling quirk that eagle-eyed fans can notice with enough effort.
Will they BEAT ARMY? Maybe, maybe not…all that I can say is that after a marathon of a season, I would hope that Navy can at least cap it off with a win.
