Senator Hanson said she got on “reasonably well” with former Liberal treasurer Josh Frydenberg, who is reportedly mulling a return to politics after losing his seat at the 2022 election.
But she said former prime minister and current party president Tony Abbott was the person with the best chance of leading the Liberals.
I’m not sure makes much sense to talk about who you’re prefer to lead a political party that you don’t support.
If you dislike the party, then you may ‘prefer’ the weakest leader possible so that the party struggles. Or you may prefer a savvy leader, just in case that party wants to do something good with its power. Or you may prefer a leader that you are personally amiable with (which is what Hanson seems to be saying). In any case, there is definitely some conflict of interest across what is best for you personally vs what is best for the political party that you support vs what is best for the country as a whole.
