I’ve been surprised how many other people I know have been stocking up on food.

If you have even a very small outdoor space it’s really worth growing things too. Considering how warm it is this year it’s probably still not too late to get some leaf veg like Swiss chard/leaf beet or mustard greens established for the winter. It only takes a few days of eating only dried/tinned/processed foods to become extremely grateful for anything fresh.

Bigger picture, I’m finding it hard to imagine politicians finding any money under the current status quo for increased farming subsidies to support changes in agriculture.

Like lots of other things though, a big shakeup of the food system has the potential for huge external benefits and cost savings though. Diet is an enormous factor in the ‘disease burden’ we are currently throwing money at via NHS and disability costs, and kids who eat well do better in education and grow to their full height, just as a couple of examples.

Probably worth pointing out as well that there is huge unmet demand for allotments.
