Follow the Financials. The stats of each team are just red herring as to the committees unprecedented decision.

The 10K showed sports revenue has trended down in the nine months ended July 1, 2023 — dropping 1.3% compared to the year-ago period. Remember the ESPN layoffs?

The question should be, “What happens financially within ESPN/ABC if they SEC does not generate it’s typical revenue during playoffs/bowls?”

Having an SEC team in the playoffs and a major bowl has been the norm financially. 2023 produced a deviation that an SEC team would not be in a playoff and in only 1 major bowl, the Orange bowl.

This brings to question, did the committee decide to correct that deviation back to its norm for financial reasons of a for-profit company (ESPN/ABC) and not in the interest of student athletics?
