In 1906, Ohio State poached Albert E. Herrnstein from Purdue as their new head coach.
In his first year, his Buckeye squad made school history as the best OSU team yet. They didn’t allow a single touchdown all season, while outscoring their opponents to the tune of 153-14 en route to a then-school best 8-1 record, undefeated in Ohio Athletic Conference conference play and a conference championship to show for it. Their lone loss? A 6-0 loss to Herrnstein’s alma mater, the Michigan Wolverines.
Herrnstein’s 1906 Buckeyes also saw the first use in school history of the newly-legal forward pass, in their 12-0 win over Wooster.
This team would be the best of the four Herrnstein-led Buckeye teams. He finished his tenure at 28-10-1, with 4 of those losses coming from the Wolverines, and the title of the winningest Buckeye coach so far. That title would remain until legendary OSU coach John Wilce (who coached Buckeye legend Chic Harley, tallied the first W over Michigan, and won 3 conference championships) surpassed him with 78 wins in his time as HC from 1915-1928.
