Patterson recently expressed an interest in getting back into coaching. Lincoln Riley and Southern Cal need a defensive coordinator, and this job seems like it would be right up his alley.
Patterson wants to run the defense and be left alone. Judging from Riley’s experience with Alex Grinch, he’s perfectly happy to allow his defensive coordinator complete control of the ball. Patterson can go be the head coach of the defense (and assistant head coach if that is needed), fix that side of the ball for the Trojans, and Riley can stick with the offense.
The second biggest problem Riley has behind a poorly coached defense is a S&C program that is a joke. Patterson is a big believer in S&C, he ran a developmental program at TCU, and they built recruits who were solid athletes in high school into stud players and NFL draft picks in college. Let Patterson help Riley find a replacement for Bennie Wylie, and you’re killing two bird with one stone: fixing the defense and making USC a physical presence on the field again.
S&C is also closely tied to program culture, and Patterson is a big culture guy. Patterson can fix their on-field and off-field issues at USC.
Patterson is in the limelight and front and center for head coaching jobs that open in 2024, Riley shows he can act as program CEO and turn a team weakness into a strength. This is a win-win situation for USC.
So, what is stopping SC from hiring Patterson?
