HOW TO READ THIS TABLE
Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a “Logo” link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 13. The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll’s Borda count rules. New for the 2023 season, the following two columns show information about each team’s previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The ‘U’ column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish “ranked” teams above it to “receiving votes” teams below it.
Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Missouri is ranked 10th in this week’s poll, and 31 voters placed the Tigers exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the “Wilner” diagonals. Last season’s practice of trolling the team whose rank matches the week number is going to continue this year because I am a bad programmer and can’t make it work again.
NOTES FOR THIS WEEK
Two teams sit on the upper Wilner diagonal this time. Brian Fonseca placed Logo Notre Dame in his 25th spot, and Don Williams didn’t include Logo Tulane at all, each 8 spots below the teams’ consensus ranks in the poll. Logo Fresno State set the lower Wilner Diagonal this week, as Creg Stephenson left the Bulldogs in his 21st spot after their loss to Logo New Mexico State.
The team with the most votes matching their rank is Logo Georgia. 61 voters placed the Bulldogs in 1st place. On the other hand, the team with the fewest votes matching their rank is Logo Tennessee, with only 2 voters ranking the Volunteers in their 25th spot. Altogether, 562 votes matched the team’s rank in the poll. Moreover, 491 votes were off by ±1 rank, 235 were off by ±2 ranks, 80 were off by ±3 ranks, 33 were off by ±4 ranks, and 18 were off by ±5 ranks. The highest-ranked team to be left off a ballot is Logo Tulane, as 1 voter did not have the Green Wave on their ballot. The lowest-ranked team to appear on all 62 ballots was Logo Kansas State in 19th. The two closest teams were Logo Iowa and Logo Oklahoma State, with only 3 points keeping the Hawkeyes over the Cowboys. Conversely, a whopping 122 points separate Logo Arizona and Logo Notre Dame, more than any other teams only one rank apart. Logo Tennessee managed to sneak into the Top 25 somehow despite only appearing on 15 ballots, which has to be close to a record.
This week, teams in the receiving-votes section received 117 votes (7.5%) for a total of 305 points (1.5%). Logo Utah received the highest vote of any team in that area, with Emily Adams, Emily Leiker, and Steven Johnson ranking the Utes in their 19th slot. 213 distinct team-rank combinations occurred in votes this week, of which 52 were unique. The most common vote was placing Logo Georgia 1st, cast by 61 voters (98%). The team with the lowest variation in votes was Logo Georgia with a standard deviation of 0.127. On the other hand, nobody could agree on where to put Logo Tulane. The Green Wave had the largest standard deviation of 2.63. This week, 1 team received their first vote of the season. Welcome to the 2023 AP Poll, New Mexico State! That brings the total number of teams to receive at least one vote this season up to 72. In addition, 2 teams received a vote this week after receiving none last week, but getting some in earlier weeks. Welcome back to Logo Clemson, and Logo UCLA! Unfortunately, the following 1 team did not receive any votes this week after getting at least one last week. Depending on your rooting interests, better luck next week or good riddance to Logo USC.

Now you can quickly compare how each voter’s ballot changed this week and since the start of the season! Like the team progression tables, this is a bit wonky, but something is better than nothing. Please let me know what you think and give me any feedback or bug reports you notice.
Also, this made me realize how many repeat and near-repeat names the voters have this year. There are two Adams and a Ms. Adams; two Brians; a Creg and a Greg; two Daves and two Davids; two Emilies; a Jon, two Johns, a Johnny, and two Mr. Johnsons; two Jordans; two Kirks; a Ron and a Don; two Ryans; two Scotts; a Steve, Steven, Stefan, Stephen, and a Mr. Stephenson; two Toms; two Mr. Williams; a Mr. Murphy and a Mr. McMurphy; a Robert and a Bob; three Matts; four Mikes, a Michael, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Someone please comment that you read this, even if you have no feedback, just so I can see that somebody has actually read this part.
Similar to the section above, this will look at changes in ballots from one week to the next. However, instead of comparing each team for each voter, these tables will consider one team and each row will show how each voter moved them compared to the previous week. This is a rough “it doesn’t even work yet” concept, so please provide any ideas you may have about what would be cool to see in it. Should I sort the table by the previous week’s ranks, the new ranks, or the change in rank?
And then there’s always some other stuff I want to do eventually:
- Compare the changes between teams that played each other in the previous week. E.g. in Week 10, coming into this week, Logo Oklahoma had 1,010 points and Logo Oklahoma State had 77 points, for a combined 1,082. After this week, the Cowboys have 660 points and the Sooners dropped to 547 points, for a combined 1,207. Where did those extra 125 points come from? Which teams were adversely affected by this game that they didn’t play? On the other hand, are there any “losing” games, where the combined total of the teams went down after a game between two ranked teams?
- Graphically show which pairs of teams’ orderings disagree with the Condorcet criterion. There is some interesting stuff going on this week between the last couple teams in and the last couple team out that would be nice to show visually. I’d be especially interested in situations where there is a head-to-head result, or a Circle of Suck situation where head-to-head consistency is impossible.
