Ladd McConkey’s dream in high school was to play WR for the Tennessee Volunteers. However, he was not recruited by any D1 schools until Kirby Smart attended one of his basketball games two weeks before national signing day. His mother hid the University of Tennessee coasters that resided in their living room when Kirby and the UGA staff visited the McConkey house after the basketball game for pizza + to extend a scholarship offer.

After receiving a scholarship offer from UGA, Ladd even scheduled an unofficial visit to the University of Tennessee hoping that they might extend an offer of their own (before he accepted the Georgia offer). The best they could do was allow him to become a walk-on.

That was a terrible mistake.

Ladd McConkey has become a fan-favorite in Athens for his accomplishments on and off the field. His athleticism and route running is astoundingly underrated. He’s not a “sneaky fast white guy”, he is a legitimate NFL caliber wide receiver.
