The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.

PREVIOUS WINNERS (By week)

  1. Baylor Bears (lost to Texas State 42-31).’
  2. Nevada Wolf Pack (lost to Idaho 33-6)
  3. Oklahoma State Cowboys (lost to South Alabama 33-7)
  4. Minnesota Golden Gophers (lost to Northwestern 37-34)
  5. UCF Knights (lost to Baylor 36-35)
  6. Miami-FL Hurricanes (lost to Georgia Tech 23-20
  7. Boise State Broncos (lost to Colorado State 31-30)
  8. North Carolina Tar Heels (lost to Virginia 31-27)
  9. North Carolina Tar Heels (lost to Georgia Tech 46-42)/ Sam Houston Bearkats (lost to UTEP 37-34)
  10. Air Force Falcons (lost to Army 23-3)

LAST WEEK: Oklahoma got quite a few votes for losing the final bedlam, and there was a small but vocal contingent of really frustrated Minnesota fans, but the rightful winner was Air Force, and the Falcons became the third Mountain West team to pick up a TJOTW trophy this year. Maybe they should change their ad to say “At the Tank” instead of “At the Peak”

Onto this week, and, well, I think the prevailing question to most of our nominees are “what the hell happened?”. Even for an award that is all about acknowledging the nastiest faceplants in college football, some of these leave you wondering how they even found anything to trip over in the first place.

NOTE: For Ease of Counting, please use carats in your vote, like this: . Thank you, and thanks for participating!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

- HOW DO YOU DROP THE FRIGGIN TOUCHDOWN ON THE 2 YARD LINE? I SWEAR ON DUBS’ WATER BOWL HAD WE LOST THAT…

And now the nominees for Week 11 are…

AIR FORCE FALCONS (lost to Hawai’i 27-13)

Again, guys? One week after getting shut down by Army to earn the Tank Job of the Week award, the Falcons follow it up with another disaster, this time in The Islands. Another three costly turnovers means nine in the last few games. The Falcons better fix their slippery hands (talons?), and fast.

FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS (lost to San Jose State 42-18)

This was a baby-seal clubbing nobody saw coming. Fresno was down 28-3 within twenty minutes and never really posed a threat to a Spartan team that was desperate to stay in the hunt for bowl eligibility. As it currently stands, the Bulldogs are now on the outside looking in for the MW Title game.

KANSAS JAYHAWKS (lost to Texas Tech 16-13)

Jayhawks kiss their top-20 ranking goodbye after struggling early and going down 13-0 to the Raiders. They did rally back and tie the game with just 26 seconds left. But then completely fell apart defensively and let the Raiders quickly drive for a lethal chip shot to win.

LOUISIANA RAGIN’ CAJUNS (lost to Southern Miss 34-31)

This was a fun, back and forth game on a Thursday night, but this never should have been that close considering the Cajuns are closing in on bowl eligibility while Southern Miss has been pretty much a disaster this year. UL is reeling and now has no margin for error where the bowls are concerned, especially with West kingpin Troy coming up.

MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (lost to Purdue 49-30)

Whatever else Minnesota’s woes have been, at least there’s been solace that they’ve had a pretty good defense. At least until the end of that Illinois game, which apparently shattered the Gophers for good, because they just gave up 604 yards and 7 touchdowns to a team that was averaging 340 a game and ranked about 100th in total offense.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS (lost to UCF 45-3)

Yeah, this team doesn’t make any sense to me either.

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (lost to Missouri 36-7)

Hoo boy did this one get ugly. Vols came in just two point dogs and even led 7-3 early in the second quarter. Then Missouri rattled off 33 consecutive points, ending the game with well over 500 yards of offense. Considering what the Vols did to Mizzou the last couple of years, revenge had to have been pretty sweet.

UCLA BRUINS (lost to Arizona State 17-7)

The Sun Devils were a burning wreckage on the side of the road after getting thoroughly blasted by Utah last week. Apparently UCLA came along, got too close when a spark (Sparky?) went into the gas tank, and was promptly immolated in the explosion. About the only way to describe what went down between these two schizophrenic teams.

WISCONSIN BADGERS (lost to Northwestern 24-10)

What is going on in Madison? For the second straight week, the Badgers have flamed out against an opponent they were favored over considerably. It was over in a half too, with the Wildcats rattling off 24 straight points after falling down by a field goal early.
