Now that the Gilded Age of Television is behind us, I remember the time as every network getting into the scripted series game. It didn’t matter if you were a small cable network, you had to have a scripted show. Even Discovery got in the game. So, what are the best shows coming from the unlikeliest of networks? No HBO or Netflix shows, just little gems coming from smaller networks.
Orphan Black. BBC has all the cred, but the sister network BBC America was new and not in the game of producing its own shows. Who knew they could produce such a unique series. Tatiana Maslany is an incredible actress and it pains me that her career hasn’t really taken off as her talent deserves.
The Knick. Coming from Cinemax, it was an incredible show about medicine at the turn of the 20th century. Incredibly shot and beautifully produced it’s one of the best shows from the Gilded Age which was terribly underseen.
Mr. Robot. Coming from USA Network, better known for Law and Order reruns, they really hit it out of the park with a tale of hacktivism which turned into an exploration of grief, loss and sci fi.
What others can you think of?
