I binged The Boys over the last month and what the actual fuck was that?

But I’m not here to discuss The Boys, except for the single observation of: They set up the show to be a commentary on how shallow and performative capitalists are, and somewhere along the way they turned into a show about superheroes defeating the evil guy with the power of love.

To compare that to Mr Robot, the show started out strong and somehow ended even stronger, but then I read that Sam Esmail planned the ending while writing the first season.

Dexter started off super strong but completely lost its voice by the end. Mad Men stumbled a bit in the middle but completely justified all the time we spent with the characters

Is it simply the fact that some writers are better than others, or does more go into it like budget? Shouldn’t good writers be able to write around the budget? Don’t they do this for a living?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and examples, but please be wary of spoilers for those unaware.
