I know that Shudder has (or had) Joe Bob Briggs but I feel like that’s an outlier since Shudder is geared towards major horror fans. I also know that there are Youtubers and Vtubers with horror personas, aswell as older horror host broadcasts being streamed on Twitch, and that’s cool but not really what I mean.

What I’m talking about is a service, let’s say Netflix, decides that they want a horror host or it’s a passion project for an actor on an original or something and Netflix wants to keep them happy. Could it work? What would it look like? Would it be only for service original films? Would it be an option you could turn on and off?

I feel like part of the charm of those type of characters is the randomness of it. You never know the movie or it’s quality until they air. The Twilight Zone loses some charm for me on streaming. Picking and choosing an episode isn’t as fun as going in totally blind at two in the morning when you can’t sleep.

But, man, I really love the cheap, schlocky nature of horror hosts and I’d love to see one get really big again like Elvira was. Maybe the culture has changed too much for that sort of thing? I don’t know. I’m watching Svengoolie tonight and it got me thinking.
